Favouring...

Here is my moral problem. I have the slight feeling that I have been favoured by my English teacher on all my SAC's. I just got my last two sac's back today and got top boxes for each of those. This now means I got the highest possible mark bracket for every sac I've done in English this year and to be honest I don't know how fair that assessment of my sac performance has been.

This teacher has liked my for a number of years because of my involvement in debating and although I don't really have any substantial evidence of her favouring me, I just have a FEELING that it has been happening. She does give me feedback, like she was slightly disappointed with my Identity and Belonging essay [but still gave me top box] and told me so but I've felt like the whole year I haven't been doing as well as I can yet I have scored well on all SAC's.

I feel
a) people who might be performing at a similar level as me may not be getting the same treatment as I do
b) come exam time, i won't have the necessary understanding of the English course to gain top marks

So really, I sorta feel guilty for getting the marks that I have on a subject that is so subjective that even I don't know what is A+ material and what is B+ material.

Does anyone else feel like this? This is the only time I will ever complain about getting good marks. :(

This is my problem too and why I don't particularly like English as a subject. Comparing my essays to others I don't think I'm a terrible writer or structure my essays badly, however I'm not sure if I'm worth the marks I get *shrug*

if you feel so bad tell another teacher and get your marks graded down. It's sort of your fault if you didn't say anything the entire year.

That part I can relate to. Maybe you actually are doing good :P (that is a real possibility btw, you *are* a clever person)
The only bit of advice I have is that if you want to improve english, get in early because my experiences say that once you get to a certain point in time before the exam teachers switch over to only encouraging you.

I had a slightly different situation, got like tick tick tick no comments indicating anything wrong A, so I go up at a later point and asked her what parts I can improve and don't take 'you're doing well' as a sufficient answer. Oh yeah I found going "I think I can improve on x" makes them admit that you're not perfect :P

This happened to me last year as far as I know...I'd always thought my eng wasn't that great all along considering results in past years, and then suddenly I hadn't dropped a single A+ through the entire of last year in english o_O Now considering that in the midyear exam last year (its year11 remember), I didn't use a SINGLE quote and still managed an A+ in my Macbeth text response, then well yeh, you can see the extent of this favouring =T And well yeh, it does suck. Come this, year now I am yet to hit the A+ range and I'm really feeling the pressure this year on English after having been completely complacent last year in English since I could do next to nothing and still own it. So basically, yes costa I've felt like this, and the one thing to remember I guess is don't get complacent over it and keep improving over the next month =T You don't have that one year that I did to realise where I really stand and catch up (assuming that you really aren't as good as your teacher thinks you are that is, otherwise, all the best for you =P).

Haha I feel this is happening to me too. Well... maybe it's an illusion this year but last year I definitely was favoured. All I had to do was put in a moderate effort to ensure I got all my homework done nice and neat and not talk too much in class and then in term 4 I barely even studied for my english exam, wrote crap essays and got an A+. It was the teacher's last year though so I maybe he thought that was license to not take things so seriously.

Thanks for the feedback/responses guys. Glad to know I'm not alone.

if you feel so bad tell another teacher and get your marks graded down. It's sort of your fault if you didn't say anything the entire year.
Cross marking already occurs at my school so the process is fairly transparent. However, I may question the guts of other teachers to mark down another teachers students. The thing is though that I don't know if my standard is worth its grade or not. It may well be, or it may well not be. My feelings may just be from my desire to never be satisfied with my work and my somewhat half glass empty approach to grading my own work especially when its subjective.

So really, I sorta feel guilty for getting the marks that I have on a subject that is so subjective that even I don't know what is A+ material and what is B+ material.

Thanks. I really should arrange with her to sit down and go through all the areas of the exam and get  her view on my work. She usually only makes one comment in her "disappointing" lectures. So I really don't have much idea where she wants me to improve so thanks Mel ! :)

None of your business/ it's irrelevant.

Thanks for that. Too true. Can't get complacent and I am of the opinion that I am not complacent because I already know I need to improve to get 8's and 9's on the exam. I just need to find ways to do that now. Thanks. Motivational

heh, one of my friends got given 82% for his Science exam in yr 9, I added his marks and they clearly came to 72%, but my friend let the 82% stand. Me and another friend bagged him out so much for that, as he was kinda competitive :)
