um but if you're ranked near the bottom, is there a point in trying for the exams. coz you'll get a bad SS even if u do ace the exams.right..?

wrong.

exam has very high weighting in the calculation of your study score, from half to two-thirds. It is the most crucial element of your SS, and regardless of how your ranking is, always try in the exam.
SACs are also moderated against exams, so doing well in the exam would indirectly benefit your SAC scores also. As well as some claims that doing extraordinarily well in the exam [in relation to your cohort] can modify your SAC ranking altogether.

in short, not doing well in SACs is not a reason to not try in the exam.

You know how teachers try to rank the cohort so that the best result is achieved for everyone?
i.e. Teachers try to make SAC ranking = Exam ranking
If someone is like, really really good at a subject, but due to bad luck did bad on SACs and is ranked 2nd or 3rd, do you think it's possible for the teacher to change the rankings based on expected exam performance (from practice exam results) to get the ranking right or would this just be unethical?

imo that'll be a bit unfair, SACs should be an accurate reflection of the person's abilities from their performance throughout the year.

say if I decided to do no work at all for the whole year, and then fire up for the exam, and have my SAC ranking changed because of that, then my SAC GA is really saying "here's an awesome grade for being lazy for the whole year".

At least it's not like other systems in other countries where they don't have SAC's, but only sit one 3-hour-exam at the end of the year to test their abilities. No GAT either, no moderation... I can't say I hate our system. :)

if everyone has to do the same subjects, and the only assessments are the exams, then there is no need for moderation :P

Pretty sure they do that at my school and also a few other schools I know from friends.
