http://www.theage.com.au/national/friend-claims-culture-of-bullying-at-xavier-20081022-56es.html?page=-1

However, principal Chris McCabe denied there was a culture of bullying at the school.

Nick "was just at the wrong place at the wrong time" on Monday, he said.

"That event lasted about five minutes but it was about 100 boys with one ball and of course the inevitable happened and an accidental injury occurred. It was purely accidental."

Of course the principal is going to deny it, to cover his own ass. Suppose there were a culture of bullying at the school, is he going to admit it in the media for every person to read? Hell no, or else he will open himself up to numerous lawsuits and litigation. Secondly, it seems too much of a coincidence for it to be the same kid who seems to be victim of systemic bullying.

It was just that kid...obviously hes the kid, that everyone normally is a little harsh too. And when they see who's about to be tackled, they put slightly more effort into tackling him, and the result is that. Or tehy reserve less when about to tackle him.

The media hype's gone a bit too far though, you don't really know what the facts are. Firstly, were the students suspended before or after their suburban rampage? I've heard that they were suspended just for the weird rugby game and that caused them to...for some reason...go around and destroy the neighbourhood.

mmmm, there was a who filled that role in my old year. once he got a doctor's certificate as supposed proof of his injury, which the "senior master" described as "the most despicable thing I've seen in 14 years of teaching" [or something like that]. However, opinion was very much divided as to whether his treatment was sufficient to cause injury. [Incidentally, I was friends with both the injured guy and his assailants.]

they got suspended for the ball game, then proceeded to go on the rampage. the schools fault in my opinion for overreacting to a kid hurting his leg and taking it out on the whole year level.

worst post ever.

dickhead kids are their own responsibility once they are off the school grounds. They make the choice to jump on peoples car roofs, break peoples property and drink to excess. Fuck them. Their problem and they should be held fully accountable.

Now when muck-up days are on pages 1 and 2 of the Age, you know it's gone a bit over the top

its only because of xavier's antics that muck-up day shenanigans have sprung up at the forefront of the media's attention.

have you people seen the phone polls regarding banning muck-up day for future graduates?

the whole thing is a fucking joke.

It should be a school based decision. The schools would do a cost-benefit analysis of holding a muck-up day and if they benefits (eg. satisfaction for their customers; the students ) ouweighs the cost (eg. security, cleaning costs) then they will do it.

My school doesn't have muck up day. We have Celebration day the day AFTER we finish school which is held at a venue other than the school. Up until this year it was at Gumbuyya park (or however you spell it) but this year it was moved to Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre because 4-5 other schools were going to Gumbuyya park and the school thought there wood be trouble or we'd be waiting aroudn for too long on the day.
