Does anyone know how to do this question: http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/studies/mathematics/further/pastexams/03fmexam1.pdf

Geo and Trig ~ Q3

I seem to have a problem with these type of questions (traverse surveys)... they only seem to be in the older exams?? Are they in the study design still??

P.s just did this exam then and got 37/40. I was really pleased because there were SO many hard questions on there, but it took me the full hour and a half to complete it lol. How much easier do you think the VCAA exams will be compared to these harder companies like MAV, TSSM and NEAP?

Never seen that before, fairly sure it's not in the current SD

Lol Amy, your not going to find it hard.. it was just my stupid mistakes that I made that made appear hard!

Awwwww *patpat*
Anyways, i did this exam today.
Grrr i got 2 questions wrong :( Coz i couldn't be stuffed checking my answers lol.
Hmm...i thought Q.7 of Core looked cyclic :( It sorta decreases a bit, then increases, then decreases, then increases agn :P
And a stupid mistake from not reading the question properly in Number Patterns lol.

Does anyone do Networks? WTF is with question 3??  :uglystupid2:
Actually, people who don't do networks can also understand it...  ::)

38/40 is extremely good for this exam IMO. T'was the first of a stack of practice exams I did but I would consider myself fantastic at further maths (modest :P) and I only managed 36. I completely agree with Q7 of core, it definitely resembles a cyclic trend when you join the data points. Additionally I have never heard of an isomorphic set of networks, although at least I know what it is now. I also had never heard of an outdegree before for matrices although I guess I should've been able to decipher the meaning, and another matrices question which said AxB=2I I didn't even consider that "I"would be an identity matrix for some retarded reason, but once again won't make that error again.

Yayyy!! I'm happy i'm not the only one!!!
Anyways, yeah this was only the second time i've heard of isomorphic, i think i saw it in the previous year's tssm exam or something, so i knew what it was.
Hmm, do u know if it's in the study design?
And since you did that question, it means you also do Networks...yay :)
Was there something i didn't see for Q.3 ?? Or is it totally wacked? lolz

But yeah, i'm aiming for 48+...so hmm...can't afford to lose more than a couple of marks over both exams :(

yeah aiming for around that too, and so far have only dropped a couple of marks on sacs all year (99% and ranked 1st in my cohort a few % above 2nd) so despite the fact it was one of my first practice exams, if you only dropped 2 marks for that exam, you are definitely on track to getting 100%, on exam 1 at least. I did forget to refer to Q3 on networks, yeah definitley an error in the answers the actual answer (4, S-F-A) wasn't even an option and they ended up at B in the answer rather than vertex A so something clearly went wrong there.

Don't be discouraged by the fact you will find a high number of people who are aiming for exceedingly high further maths study scores on these forums either, as I had explained to me recently the sample here is definitely not representative of the VCE population. Despite the fact that further maths is intensely competitive you seem like you will be in the top few % of the state if you remain on track, good luck.

EDIT: not that you needed the spiel in that last paragraph, I see that you've done further previously therefore would obviously have more of an idea about relative difficulty than me :)

as an aside what modules are you doing?

Very good point there about the people aiming for high scores!!
You seem to be going very well yourself :) I wish you all the best for achieving your desired SS.
And i'm doing Number Patterns, Graphs and Relations, and Networks.
How about you?

And about that Q.3, thanks for clearing it up for me :)

Are they in the study design still??
horizontal distance from S to R = 65 + 240 = 305
verticle distance= 50
so the strait line running from S to R would have a lenght of = (305^2 +50^2)^1/2
soz cbf with latex

I was like...no way...this is like one of the easiest questions...how could they make a mistake on it? lol :P

The modules I am doing are the same except swap number patterns for matrices. In some ways I wish I was doing number patterns instead of networks, it's not that they are necessarily hard, but rely very little on actual mathematical ability. Although I doubt I'll make any of the stupid mistakes that I have made previously on the prac exams, I like to have some sort of mathematical method/formula to back up my work, rather than just using common sense. I accidentally did a number patterns section the other day and didn't drop a mark (on the same exam I lost 1 mark in networks :P) it seems to very much related to work I've previously done in other maths.

lol yeah. ive been pretty confident (and thats an understatement) but now im starting to get that feeling where i know it'll only take one stupid, silly mistake and boom there goes my chances of a 50. ughhh. -_- i just hope i have >30 minutes to go through my answers.

lol its like pretty much 1 mark lost = 1 study score point lost i reckon..

anyway.... i havent done 2008 tssm.. but the itute one is ridiculous as well
but it only has 3 modules (number patterns, networks, matrices) so i dunno how appropriate itll be for you guys.
