In relation to these 'fancy' words, would examiners rather you use simple words whenever possible? However there are limited 'simple' words for the context, so would they take marks off if you repeat these 'simple words'?

I used to think that so long as your essay got the point across, if the simplest words were the most appropriate then that would be ok.

But apparently big words mean good marks

Yep.  Sadly, VCE marking is more of a criteria-based thing than anything else, so having a good vocab will get you marks...

But not top marks.  It's the difference between say a 45 and a 50.

U need 2 b able 2 convey ur ideas simply, but with complicated words XD

Oh the irony... ::)

Wot I mean is, start with a sentence that's been written as simply and clearly as u can, then pick 2 or 3 words and substitute them with something that demonstrates a more skillful grasp of English vocabulary.

Wot I got in2 the habit of doing every now and again: *Sentence with big, complicated words*. "In other words/Basically," *re-explained in simpler words*.

Random words (more 2 do with language analysis):

Methodology
Vernacular
Raises the question/point
Illustrates
Reflects
Presses
Portrays
Mimics
Apportions
Belittles
Mocks
Jocular
Sidestep
