How would you interpret this prompt:

"The novel suggests that an accurate understanding of the past is necessary both to the individual and the wider community" - Discuss.

I think its a very broad topic, but I have found it difficult to formulate a good discussion.

How would you go about this prompt?

Thanks :)

Start by talking about how important it is to have standards of comparison. Like, how do you know if the Party is right about this supposed "new, happy life" if you've got nothing to compare it to?

A few ideas:

Need to have a comparison - learn moral lessons, check power, see the world with clarity

Otherwise the "endless present" - party in control hence can justify their power and plant as many falsehoods as they desire

Hence no accountability and hence can do whatever unchecked
