Remember to give credit to Mao for the original idea and concept though.

Yepp, definately will because I'll be using the same equations and calculation procedures as his spreadsheet :)

It looks like atarcalc.com uses PHP, so it'd probably be better to stick with PHP if you're going to work with daniel15 on integrating it into the site. Avoiding a programming language debate but I think pretty much all those scripting languages have modules for processing PDF's pretty easily. I'd imagine PHP would have a similar simple method for processing them as well.

Pretty awesome idea by the way, good luck with it.

Alright, thanks for that then, I'll have to look into PHP, I'll try to learn it over the holidays (whilst everyone's on schoolies :( - i'm too poor to go anywhere!) so hopefully I'll at least have a prototype which is somewhat working by next year, but yeah, I think integrating it with the atarcalc site is a good idea, but I'll try to get in contact with Daniel after I get a prototype done.

But if integration ends up working, it'll be good because I won't have to worry about hosting :D

If you want to go one step further, you could use the exam tracker to work out what numbers you should be putitng into the SS estimator, then use the numbers from the estimator to put into the atar calc. But then that probably would be overdoing it, and resulting in students feeling locked in, stopped by their limitations and then getting them down on themselves.

Just remember you need something along the line "these are only predictions, we cannot be accountable blah blah blah"...

Something like the Insight line? "These predictions produced by ... are NOT an official VCAA result for the (current year) VCE. "

the only issue is that i'm not sure how to parse a pdf file, i know daniel15 managed to write a script for it when he wrote his ATAR calculator, might try to ask him about it
My method wasn't too exciting... I copied all the text from the PDF into a text file, and then wrote a PHP script to convert the raw data into SQL insert statements. The ATAR calculator runs off an SQL database containing all the data.

Yeah, although I was considering rewriting it as JavaScript eventually, which would make it easier to make standalone offline mobile apps (and calculations would be a lot quicker as they wouldn't need to hit the server). The advantage of doing server-side calculations is I know exactly how many calculations are being done by looking at hit statistics.

While learning PHP, you should learn PDO (which is the modern interface for PHP to use databases) and about PHP's object orientation features. There's a lot of old tutorials that teach old practices, like using the really old MySQL library (protip: Don't follow any database tutorial that uses the "mysql_connect" function) and messy code.

These might come in handy:

Really want to know if this is accurate. Can anyone post whether what this predicted is what they actually got? Thanks!
