would someone like to explain the multiple choice question 14. im pretty sure the answer was 2/3 but how?

Hey i roughly said the same answers. except  Q11, i said C and i kinda still stand by it (please feel free to point out why i'm wrong!!)
Also Q14, i'm no good with punnett squares but i was fairly sure it was 1/2, basing on my (maybe delusional) idea that the cross was of Pp with a PP.
Also question 23 was really badly worded - because none of the answers were really correct, i ended up putting D, because i figured that was the MOST correct,  but then changed it to C, because although the wording sounded like "the chance mutation" was created by the use of insecticide (which is wRONG), i thought maybe that was the intended answer. I hope its discluded due to ambiguity or something!!
Oh and i stand by my answer for Q 24: C,
There was no evidence on the tree that could confirm allopatric speciation. so yeah thats why i chose C. But i hate biology, so i'm probably wrong.

That's fair enough. My reasoning:
Q11. Darwin didn't know about alleles, he just talked about characteristics being inherited
Q14. II-4 and II-5 were heterozygous, that's the only where III-1 could be pp. Hence there was a 1/2 chance of III-3 being heterozygous. However, as we know that they are unaffected, this chance is reduced to 2/3
Q23. By my understanding the phenotype is 'sensitive' or 'resistant' regardless of whether a selective agent is acting on the population. Hence an agent will not affect the phenotype. A and B are incorrect
Q24. I just used elimination. If it is C that would be hugely ambiguous wording. I'm pretty sure appearing in the fossil record earlier is what you say about older fossils...ah well...

They are referring to a genotype not the phenotype.

i got the same answers as NE2000 except for Q11 about Darwins theory of natural selection. - i chose D but it was wrong, the answer is D according to my teacher because C said that favourable alleles were passed on from parents to offspring. Which is wrong because whether the alleles are favourable of not, they are still passed on to the offspring. So its D because particular characteristics suit and organism to its environment. An example of this is lions having thick coats to keep them warm during the cooler months on the savana. Or something. lol.

In the pedigree above question 14 it shows that they (III-3) do not show the trait and besides that, in the actualy question it says: 'The following pedigree shows a family in which <b>two</b> members have PKU'
Seeing II-3 and III-1 are already affected, III-3 cannot be according to what they have written and drawn.
