SAC moderation: How does it work?

Ever since Mao posted his SS calculator, I’ve been wondering about my SAC marks.

I’ve read that the highest exam mark goes to the person with the highest SAC mark. For Physics, I got the highest mid-year exam mark but I’m not ranked first in my class. Is there a possibility that my SAC mark will go down, even though on my exams I did better than that mark? For Economics, I’m the top of my class. If I get the highest mark in the exam, will that be what my SAC mark is equal to? How does that work when my Unit 3 mark is higher than my Unit 4 mark?

For subjects with two exams, what does the highest exam mark mean? Is it the highest exam mark out of the two, or is it an average of the highest exam mark from both?

These questions might seem a bit straightforward, but I wouldn’t have started a thread if they were to me. Having said that, any help would be much appreciated.

Don't quote me on this, but from what I've heard, every subject has 3 Graded Assessments, GA1, GA2, and GA3. These GA's have different weightings (which you can find from the VCAA website) and the weighted results are added up for a 'final score'. For 2-exam subjects excluding maths, GA1 is the first exam, GA2 are the Unit 3/4 SAC scores, and GA3 is the second exam.

Your SAC scores are moderated by how well your cohort performs in the exam(s). If your cohort is not as strong, your SAC marks will be moderated down, and vice versa if your cohort does well. But you keep your exam mark; it doesn't change.

Can you link me to them? Thanks.

Most of the ones I've seen are related to study scores.

Just wondering, if you're ranked first (or top 3, at least) will you still get your SAC scores dragged down by your weak cohort if you maintain a high exam mark?

okay because i really cbfed finding the thread etc, i'll add what i know.

SAC's are used as a way of ranking individuals within a class/s. i.e. 1st, second third etc. The difficulty of SAC's as we know can range from school to school which is why exams and moderation comes into account.
Whatever you get as your exam mark, you keep. For example, you get 45/50, you get 45/50, (A+,A,B+ etc will depend on the performance of that years cohort in that subject). However depending on your ranking, your SAC marks can change.
The person ranked first will get the highest exam mark as their SAC mark. The 2nd ranked person will get the second highest exam mark in their class as their SAC mark. Foe example, Joe is ranked 1st and gets A on his exam. Blow is ranked 2nd and gets B+ on his exam. Hoe is ranked 3rd and she gets A+ on the exam. Essentially these are the three highest exam marks in the class for that subject.
All individuals will keep their exam marks. Joe however will get A+ as his SAC mark because his ranked first. Blow will get A since his ranked second and How will get B+ since she's ranked third.

In regards to your mid-year physics mark, you will keep it. However your SAC's will be moderated so that you get the exam mark that is equal to were you are ranked. If you got A on the exam, you'll keep your A. Since you're ranked 1st, you'll get your exam mark as your SAC mark.

I've waded through some of them, and found http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/vce/publications/vcebriefpresent30-04-08.pdf.

In the example they give, Student X is ranked number 1 in both exams and sacs.

CRS:92/100
EXAM:113/120
MOD:100

Why is the moderated score 100? If highest sac mark = highest exam mark, wouldn't it be 94?

this is pretty commonsense i guess, but if im highest sac mark, and i get highest exam mark.... will my exam mark be MY sac mark?

im ranked 6th or 7th sacs for unit 3 BM
im ranked 3rd for sacs unit 4 bm

say the person ranked first gets 110/120 for the exam
and i get 118/120 for the exam

i will not get a higher study score then that person thats ranked first?

theres about 80-90 students doin methods

im probaly ranked 60ish. now if i gun that exam and do better than say those people from 20-40, i cant get a higher SS than them?

I think the golden rule about SAC moderation is that you keep your exam mark.

However, for your SAC marks, I think (but am not sure) it works like this:
Say that for SACs, person A is ranked 1st and person B is ranked 2nd, and the highest exam marks for the cohort were 96% and 94% (These don't have to be A or B's exam marks).
Person A's SAC marks would get moderated to 96%, and person B's SAC marks would be moderated to 94%. They would keep their exam marks though.
In your case, for Unit 3, your moderated SAC mark would be equal to the 6th highest exam mark for your cohort. For Unit 4, your moderated SAC mark would be equal to the 3rd highest exam mark for your cohort.

There are probably other factors which also moderate your SAC mark, such as the overall cohort performance, so while this reasoning might give the correct ordering after moderation, it might be out by a certain factor.

Your study score is gotten by ranking the sum of your GA1, GA2, and GA3 scores against others'. It's hard to predict, but in general, the exam is a far more important indicator than SAC marks.
