Can someone explain this whole ranking and SS stuff?

Im really confused into how this all works!

I know that we are ranked individually against the rest of the students in that subject in our own school, but how does this fit into determining your score?

Ive heard something along the lines of, If your ranked 1st, and the highest exam mark is say 85%, thats what you will get for your SACS, regardless of what you really got? Am i correct? No, Yes!!

Its so confusing!!
VCE 2007 - Outdoor and Environmental Studies - 44 (40.80)

                Biology - 36 (36.68)
