I would strongly advise against using big words for the sake of using big words to make yourself look smart, because you won't look smart, you will just look like a wanker.

too true brendan. unless you know how to use alot of big words well, dont. i know people who added random big words just cos they knew what they ment. big no no, it ruins fluency.

Well that makes me feel a lot better as my vocabulary hasn't expanded much since middle school. However, I'm finding it increasingly harder to smoothly express what I want to in essays and work. :(

Lol, I'm afraid I am a victim of this in my English exam. Using 'facade' and 'inhibitions' (still don't know what this means)... And, I didn't even look at my dictionary to check.  :idiot2:

I'd say theres a difference between learning 'big words' for the sake of it, and using formal or sophisticated language APPROPRIATELY as this can easily score you marks, and is almost a necessity to get the 9s and 10s I'd say unless you're naturally quite good at English. The main words I'd look out for and try to learn and use are the ones contextually appropriate to your texts which can summarise a longer phrase in a single word. For example, for Hard Times I continually used the phrase 'Utilitarian zeitgeist' rather than 'the Utilitarian philosophy which was prevalent around that era'. Saves you words, and shows off a lot more. Just don't become one of those people who spam long words and lose fluency as a result, and especially don't use them inappropriately.

These are the kind of words that he's probably looking for anyway. Words like pusillanimous and flocciwhatever are useless most of the time.

-epitomises
-detracts
-impinged
-eventuating
-succumb
-devoid
-imparted
-encapsulates
-exhibiting
