The earnings of Arts graduates

Firstly, if you do stand-alone BA do not expect to get a job in the first place let alone worry about wages.
That's a pretty ridiculous claim. Wanna back it up?

I'd probably argue that it doesn't matter a great deal what the average salary is. If you're very good at what you do, you can expect a higher wage then if you are crap at what you do. Moreover (and more importantly) you can't buy job satisfaction - you should just do what you love because that is where you're most useful.

You just can't resist the temptation to have a shot at Arts, can you?

You drag the same issues up every time. We get it- you think Arts is a joke. You think the job prospects for such a course are minimal. There is nothing to be gained from doing Arts- we get it! Please move on and stop citing the same articles to put your point across. It's getting quite tedious and boring. I have accepted that you have your opinion and I think it's time you moved on.

And just for the record, if everyone did Commerce and Medicine, the world would be a very bland place.

double amen to that!
as much as I enjoy law, the stuff I'm doing in my arts degree is so much more interesting and fulfilling than law will ever be. I envy the people who do arts alone cos they can do more subjects!

A survey of graduates who completed their course requirements in 2006 done around four months after the completion of degree requirements found that:
http://www.graduatecareers.com.au/content/download/3465/14505/file/Grad%20Files%202007.pdf

% of bachelor degree graduates still seeking full-time employment by field of education:

Humanities       24.9
Languages       24.1
Visual\Perform. Art    33.7
Social Sciences    26.1
Psychology       21.1
Life Sciences       27.3

compared to an average across all disciplines of 15.5%

Andrew Norton, is the Policy and Government Relations Advisor to Vice-Chancelor Glyn Davis (University of Melbourne), and a research fellow at the Centre for Independent Studies.
http://andrewnorton.info/2006/09/norton-vs-the-arts-lobby-again/

"Nor is there any evidence that acquring an arts degree, as opposed to some other degree, gives you generic skills that enable you to adapt better to the ‘changing nature of the labour market’ - though having an arts degree is more likely to mean that you will have to rely on generic skills rather than on the specific content of your course. The book How College Affects Students surveys the American higher education research literature, and struggles to find consistent differences between student majors in development of generic skills, except that quantitative courses tend to increase quantitative competencies (as one would hope). But the book says that the ‘evidence is less clear-cut for the acquisition of verbal skills’, with one study finding that social science courses improved them, but five others not replicating the finding (p.91). Similarly, the evidence on acquiring critical thinking skills is also inconsistent (p.175). It’s not that there aren’t usually improvements in these skills during the university years; it’s just that there aren’t reliable differences between disciplines.

When asked at the end of their course about their acquisition of generic skills, with questions about analytic, problem-solving and written communication skills, ’society and culture’ graduates don’t stand out as having acquired unusually high confidence in their abilities. As reported in Graduate Course Experience 2005, 67.2% of bachelor degree graduates agreed that their generic skills had been improved (that is, on average they picked one of the top two points on a five-point scale). However, graduates in the sciences, engineering, and agricultural and environmental courses all showed slightly higher agreement. The lowest agreement was among architecture students, on 59.2%."

We get it- you think Arts is a joke.
I never said that.

There is nothing to be gained from doing Arts- we get it!
Never said that either.

Please move on and stop citing the same articles to put your point across. It's getting quite tedious and boring.
Then why do you keep responding to them?

Brendan, just in case I say something that I seriously regret, I am choosing to not respond to your posts. I am getting increasingly frustrated by your robotic-like posts and constant citations of articles.

Far out man, you must be like totally oblivious to what your forum behaviour is like!

Are you telling me that after your constant ranting and carrying on about the supposed uselessness of an Arts degree that you are not directly IMPLYING that Arts is a joke and that there isn't much to be gained from completing it? Give me a break, you bag the hell out of it every chance you can get.

I wait in great anticipation for your response that will undoubtedly include multiple links to newspaper articles and a myriad of useless statistics...
