You'll be charged to list the item, the fee varies upon what information and features you include on the listing. For example, if you make the listing appear bold in search results it yields a higher fee.

You are then charged a fee once the item sells, based on the amount the item sells for.

Do we have to pay $5 everytime we put up an item for sell (auction/buy it now thing)? or is that for free?

Yes, you have to pay the $5 flat-rate plus the insertion fee.

For example, if you list an item with a reserve of $20, you'll have to pay $5.75.

Then the item sells for $40. Ebay will charge $2.10 because the item sold.

Eww, they charge a lot :(

I need to get around to selling my beanie kids at one point. Seeing as I've never used ebay to buy stuff before, also learning how much they're actually worth, mailing it etc, seems like too much effort some time
I should make an account to see how it works. x_x

I've used eBay a few times, but only once to sell
http://myworld.ebay.com/daniel_1515

Basically, you're charged the Insertion Fee, plus the Final Value Fee if the item sells, plus any additional fees (as Josh mentioned above). The Insertion fee depends on the starting price... This is the reason a lot of eBay auctions start at $0.99 - It reduces the fees (insertion fee is only $0.30 at that point).

Do we have to pay $5 everytime we put up an item for sell (auction/buy it now thing)? or is that for free?
Woah, $5 for a buy it now? I never realised it was so expensive  :o
