Nah, i'd something a little more exotic and overload the ham with paracetamol.

It'll be wonderful to see them die. Slowly.

If they don't die, they'll suffer permanent liver damage. MUHAHAHAHAHA!

Back again.

Work is good but for the last 4 weeks I have been getting 3 hours/week and quite frankly, $39.21 doesn't go very far when you are trying to slowly build up paying for your own stuff.

Eg if I was to start paying for my phone and if I eventually get a car => petrol + insurance, I'd run out of money for that, let alone this need to eat stuff and go outside.

Should I start at square 1 applying to all the other retail places or is there a way to do better. Somehow I feel 2 months of 'experience' doesn't mean much. :(

they say you should never stop looking =P

but I must urge you to consider tutoring, even at unprofessional levels, the somewhat irregular and tax-free $20/hr pay is quite good =)

Have they offered an explanation as to why you are only receiving three hours a week? That seems ridiculous.

I'm never there when the department manager is on (4-7pm saturdays), in fact I've only seen him once. Two weeks ago I was complaining about this at work and one of the other people who is very nice who loves writing on our little communications notepad wrote a note for me asking for more hours =) and then a week later the department manager rings and says he will try to give me more hours but this week I still had 3.

Well don't panic just yet. Hopefully your department manager accidentally overlooked your request for the current roster and will remember to factor more hours for you into the next roster. It just seems stupid that someone could only be given three hours for a whole week.

Some suggestions:

Where do you live? Try getting a job at the state netball hockey centre, they pay extremely well and are very understaffed. (It's near the Zoo and Melbourne Uni)

Otherwise, send your CV is somewhere like MSAC (Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre).

You could also try working at an afterschool care place (that's what I do - at the local primary school), or earn some cash by doing the holiday program at your old school/ another school (pay's suprisingly good)

Safeway is like that, if your over 18 and starting you'll struggle to get hours. If you started at 15, you get a lot of hours, because you are cheap, and if you stay on you are more likely to get more hours at age 18 than a newbie because you are experienced and the boss knows you. If you are still working in the deli ask for a contract, you get paid less but you will be guaranteed hours. If that fails, try and get a transfer to another department that will give you a contract. Good luck with the smelling like ham after every shift! And the chicken ovens are a bitch.

safeway is shit, i worked there for 6 months and after it's 'new' period of about 6 months, everything starts to degrade and managers are complete inelastic fuckheads. Not gonna work at some supermarket outlet ever again.

and it got boring, 4 hour shifts seemed like 8 hour shifts and it just got depressing

I completely agree.

I work at Safeway, two of my shifts are trolley boy, these shifts are manageable.

My 3 hour register shift feels like someone is slowly tourturing me. :(

Ask for a contract.
IF They say no, then find out which departments are understaffed [usually perishables, in the case of my store] and ask someone in perishables for a contract, then leave the Deli.

Or work both!

I did both Service and Liquor in my Safeway days...I started when I was 18 and I was getting 38 hour weeks (yes, during the fucking exam period - but I had like a 15 day break) as a casual...maybe you should go work in Service? They're *always* shortstaffed.

This may seem a little bit different, but have you considered applying for McDonald's? Once you email them your details, they usually respond within 48 hours, if not less if they are understaffed. I have been with my McDonald's for about 3 years now, and they still give me consistent 5 hour shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. 15 hours a week when I am supposedly meant to be studying :)
