Java vs C++

i'm thinking of picking up a new language, but dont know which, Java or C++??
from the syntax of these two languages they're very similar...

I am atm leaning towards C++, as i have visual studio.NET on my laptop, and (hoping) some part of my retained knowledge of the very obsolete VB might be useful?

otherwise java hardcore'ers please convince me :P

java, there is demand for java programmers in the IT industry if you plan to get a job there, although I don't know what the diff is between java and j2EE, excalibur could clear things out

best choice would be PHP.

A lot of things are moving to the web though... Even enterprise applications, about 40-50% of the enterprise applications at my workplace are web-based.

I was joking, PHP wasn't an option :p

Learn both, from what I remember they both have a similiar type of syntax, and It'd be fun to learn two :P

This is because Java actually derives most of it's syntax from C++ :)

If you pick up C++, you won't have any troubles whatsoever with Java, and you will be a better programmer for it.

Why?

C++ is not forgiving. You do it right, or your application won't work and you won't know why. However, it will teach to to program better in the long run.

I'd learn Java first, then eventually learn C++ if need be. Java is easier, you don't have to mess around with pointers or memory management. It's simpler, and is rather safe to use, easy to debug etc. :)

If you're in it for the long run I'd say C++, but if you're just looking for a bit of programming here-and-there, I'd say Java.

It won't really stuff up your computer, it's just often annoying to worry about those things while programming.

If you haven't yet learnt Java, J2SE, they are simply different APIs, as J2EE apps are usually deployed in enterprise/web environments. J2SE for learning/client applications.

I am not sure if J2EE is missing anything from what is included with SE, perhaps some javax stuff is missing? dno
