Bumping this, because I'm trying to get another letter in (that previous letter didn't get in)
To TP of Frankston (Thurs, 23/10) who advocated we should reinstall tariffs on foreign goods: I cannot think of many other policies that could do more to reallocate wealth to rich fat-cat protectionists at the expense of the general Australian consumer, as well as destroying the overall wealth of the Australian economy. If domestic trade benefits Australians, then there is no reason why foreign trade doesn't benefit both Australians and our foreign friends.
Collin, Northcote
I don't remember what his post was, but out of nowhere, the guy just advocated taxes on imports, and wished that only whatever couldn't be made in Australia should be imported.
I don't think this post will get in actually. I should really aim for bigger fish (The Age), like Brendan - but I'm a tabloid kinda guy, haha.
You live in Northcote!!! That's where I live...
Our electorate is the most strongly Labor-aligned seat in all of Australia. How do you feel about it?
I think it's pretty awesome. What did you think I would answer?
I feel a bit sorry for you - you have more Liberal orientated political ideas and if you vote Liberal, it would do nothing to the result (that's a problem in living in a extremely safe electorate). What's even sadder is that the Greens (I think) get more votes in our electorate in the November election than the Liberals.
I haven't registered to vote yet, and won't be voting this State election for similar reasons. Shouldn't be fined (I've heard) because I haven't even registered at all (like, I mean, the form you get when you're 16).
