Hey VCENotes members,
Throughout 2009, I will be offering what I refer to as
hybrid tuition for a range of subjects. This will consist of sessions which streamline tuition for a number of subjects at the same time, running under a fixed fee. However, these sessions will be adapted to your goals and current needs, depending on what skills of yours need to be established or consolidated. The reason why I have decided to undertake such a non-standard method of tuition is because having been through VCE myself, it is evident that an hour a week for many subjects results in much wasted time, particularly on re-learning concepts which you already understand and also in travel time (which is why I give you the option of taking 2 hours at a time if you want). Time is definitely your most valuable asset in VCE, and I intend to not waste any of this for you and make the tuition process as efficient and effective as possible, whilst still maintaining an enjoyable atmosphere. My hybrid system is designed to maintain your interest by being only taught things which you truly need and I will regularly encourage you to speak up over any issues you may have with subjects which I can assist you with.
My tuition will specialise in the following subjects (I will refer to these as
primary subjects) and follow a structured course with relevant notes and so on:
Maths Methods (non-CAS) Units 1-4Obtained a raw study score of 49 in 2008Maths Methods would definitely take the cake as the subject which exhibits the greatest degree of diversity in its relative difficulty for different students. My intention is to adapt to your individual strengths, weaknesses and needs in order to reach the goals you want to achieve; regardless of what they are. I intend to explain the concepts behind each area of the course thoroughly, whilst also working on accuracy, but also particularly the ability to approach new and unfamiliar questions, and help you develop a systematic thinking process behind these.
English Units 1-4Obtained a raw study score of 43 in 2008As you should be aware, the English course changed in 2008 so I am part of the only year level which has ever experienced the new Creating and Presenting section of the exam; a section which past students and many teachers and tutors are unfamiliar with. I believe I have a good understanding of how to approach this section of the exam, and even if I personally have not studied the context which you are doing, I can definitely give you guidance on the type of work that you should do as preparation, especially shown by my
context guide on this forum. For Reading and Responding, I specialise in
Hard Times by Charles Dickens and
Citizen Kane by Orson Welles, but will read and study other texts as necessary. For Creating and Presenting, I specialise in
Whose Reality?, particularly in
The Shark Net and
Enduring Love, but can comfortably switch to other contexts should the need arise. Also, I have shown on many occasions on this forum my ability to mark and criticise work fairly and comprehensively with precise and specific guidance as to what could be done to improve rather than broad statements which lack direction. This should come in handy particularly considering that most English teachers will not go to such depth when marking essays, and such criticism, and acting upon it is imperative to success. Also, despite my study score, I have achieved perfect 10/10s over several trial exams marked by VCAA examiners on every section of the exam, and hope to be able to reflect such scores back on to you.
I am also proficient in the following
secondary subjects and may assist in explaining and consolidating individual concepts or questions which you have been stuck on should the need arise during one of the hybrid sessions. For these, I will be happy to answer any questions on the spot, although giving me notice will be in both my and your interest. The purpose of these is just to allow your tuition to suit your needs. For example, prior to the midyear exams, all I did was study chemistry, and you could request me to pause Methods tuition for the weeks leading up to the Chemistry exam for Chemistry tuition. A similar scenario could apply for something like the UMAT on which I could give targeted advice on how to improve. Anyway, the secondary subjects are as follows:
Obtained 98 overall percentile with approximately 95 percentile for section one and 100 percentile for section three- Specialist Maths Units Units 3/4
Obtained a raw study score of 41 in 2008 Obtained a raw study score of 47 in 2008 Obtained a raw study score of 49 in 2007- Business Management Units 3/4
Obtained a perfect raw study score of 50 in 2008Also, let me stress that you can choose any combination of the above subjects (even just Methods or just English is fine).
I will be charging
$30 an hour, or
$50 for two hours for private tuition, whilst discounts can be negotiable for group tuition. Tuition will occur mostly at the State Library in the City. However, because I reside in the Doncaster East area on the south-east side of Melbourne, I can also travel to nearby libraries such as Box Hill library if necessary, or even to your residence if it is easily accessible by public transport and nearby. More locations may open up as I get my driving license and know my university location and timetable. Also, keep in mind that I am frequently online and will be glad to help you over the internet when I am available at no extra charge.
PM me on this site or email me at
[email protected] if you have any queries. Any queries about the nature of the 'hybrid' system should just be posted here as others may also share the same concerns, and I hope I've made it clear enough what I hope to do. Good luck and hope to see you next year :]
