Arts/Law?
« on: December 17, 2008, 08:52:21 pm »
I've already posted my question in some obscure location on here, but I figure this is a better place to ask :)

I've got Arts/Law @ Monash as my 1st pref...REALLY want it lol! I got 98.75, and the fringe ENTER for this course last year was 98.70. Because I scored very high in English Language and Revs, I'll be given +3 bonus aggregate points through the middle band consideration. I know for a fact that my aggregate +3 equates to a 99.00 ENTER. How good a chance would I have of making it in? Anyone know people who got into this course with an ENTER below 99?

Using last year's numbers, I'd say you have quite a fair chance of making it through normally, and quite a significant one through the middle-band. However, I have NO idea what the effects of UoM only offering post-graduate law will be upon the Monash side, so the numbers may well change and yeh, I really have no idea.

^ From what I know, Melbourne already stopped teaching undergrad law last year. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong!)

Yep, you can only do a full 3 year bachelor degree @ Melbourne (Arts, commerce etc), in order to be accepted into the JD at Melbourne Uni

In regards to your query JL, I think you should get in. I mean, the credit points are amazing, and being in the middle band (do you have SEAS by any chance?) may make you a highly likely candidate for the place! I hope you get in, we need more law students here anyways. XD

Oh really? I haven't investigated the law side and Melbourne still offered Med last year so I assumed it was the same. Well if so, then I guess you could probably expect the numbers to stay around the same.

Hopefully =] ..And no, I don't have SEAS...I don't think I'd be able to get that, coming from Caulfield Grammar LOL!!

As in, the 2007 high school graduates were the last group accepted into Melbourne's LLB?

LOL...maybe someone will get +5 bonus aggregate points in the middle-band?! >_<" But to get that you would have to, for example, get 45+ in 2 different English subs and 40+ in 1 humanities sub, or get 45+ in an English and 40+ in 3 humanities subs 0_0

you probably will but if not then arts for a year and you'll pretty much definitely be able to transfer and you'll be ahead in your arts degree anyway so it'll all even out in the end.

Yeah that's why Arts is my 2nd pref :)
But my mum is scared (not because she's pushy, but because she knows how much I want this!) that it'd be too difficult to add law in 2nd year, like too much competition for it. I'm not sure if this is true though.

I was talking to someone from the Monash law school at some point last year, and apparently they're quite good with transfers. They take things like extra-curricular activities into account as well as grades. And, I imagine that your arts grades would be pretty good, given that you did so well in a bunch of essay-writing subjects. I think go for it. It's still a bit of a risk, but if you're determined, I think you'll get in.

I have a friend who got an ENTER around 95 or so and did Arts at Monash in his 1st year, then transferred to Arts/Law in his 2nd year. His average was around 80 or so, though I think he deliberately took some easy subjects in order to get a good average.
