Medicine through Melbourne Model

Hi guys,

Just wondering what people's opinions are about Medicine (post-graduate course) through the Melbourne Model.
All up it's a 7 year course, which is 2 years longer than MBBS at Monash and one year longer than most interstate medicine courses.
However, in saying this studying Medicine through the Melbourne model provides you with a Bachelor of Biomedicine (or Science) degree and an MD (Doctor of Medicine). Could this extra time spent at uni, be advantageous for entrance into certain specialties for example. Are there any genuine advantages of this pathway compared to MBBS?

Thanks.

Nah, i am just worried that from the rumours i have heard that the subjects arent "thorough" enough.
This is because since UOm increased its subject capacity from something like 1200 to 1600, hence, while theres more subjects, not every subject is as detailed.

Difficult to say

Talking about career pathways post graduation, it would depend whether or not the melbourne course offers a chance for research. Being involved in research is a good thing to have on your CV when applying to specialist colleges.

However as melbourne and monash have seperate hospitals it's likely that there will be little difference between the acceptance to postgraduate pathways as i beleive the hospital makes recommendations for applicants to the relevant training college for the training spots available at that hospital

USyd and UNSW have the same relationship. USyd is exclusively graduate yet both schools thrive and produce outstanding doctors, with each course having evolved to give it's own experiences and advantages

But for the most part it's too early to tell, the main advantage of the melbourne model is that you have the opoortunity to be exposed to the medical profession before you take med and can therefore decide if you like it or not, with monash you'll graduate a couple of years earlier, which is nothing really in the long run

Dear Andrew,

It is yet to be confirmed but at this stage our information is that there will most likely be an assigned quota of guaranteed full-fee places in the MD.  In that case if more students meet the criteria than places available then some students will not be offered the guaranteed place.

For this reason we would recommend that even those students who obtain an ENTER of 99.9 (and above) sit the GAMSAT so they can then be considered for the ‘standard entry’ places should a guaranteed place not be available.

Katrina
And yes that was after a series of emails I sent them interrogating them about it. SO MUCH FOR GUARANTEED EH!?

The guaranteed spot is on the condition that you maintain a 75% average.

Wow, imagine getting 99.9x and STILL not getting a guaranteed place. That's amazing.

There's just too much bloody insecurity going through that route, which is why I'll opt for Monash.

No, not really.

In that 1/2 years extra, any possible benefit from being in uni would most likely pale in comparison to external experience that you could obtain from the healthcare system that is relevant to whichever specialisation you want.

It does make it sound like they're trying to make medicine at UoM as elite as possible, which is saying something since medicine in Australia in general is pretty damn elite.

I guess it's a bit difficult for them to confirm places now, considering they haven't yet had a group of Biomed students that have passed onto the postgrad course. You wouldn't expect them to really be assured and finalized for a couple of years. So they probably deserve a bit of leeway when it comes to these things (although I know when it comes to our uni places, we hope a guarantee will be a guarantee)

But if you look at it, around 60-odd people get 99.9x. It's not like all of them will do med. Let's say around 30 want to do med. Then maybe half have been offered places at Monash and choose to go there and a couple go interstate, leaving a dozen to go to Melbourne. Then maybe a couple won't get the 75 average required to maintain their 'guarantee' and we assume that none of the students drop-out, transfer etc....and I would expect the uni to keep at least 10 places in their CSP guaranteed quota. So it should still be relatively safe, although if anyone was planning to go by that route, the doubt may be too much. Hopefully the uni takes a more definite approach next year :).

So you think much less security if you got 99.xx (not 99.9x) and are planning to take a full fee place?
