'No changes' to terminology in schools
April 17, 2008 - 2:36PM

Schools will not move to stop using words like mum and dad, or girlfriend and boyfriend, the NSW Education Department says, despite reports that public schools are under pressure to provide gay-friendly environments.

Changes to terminology, such as using the word "partner" to cover heterosexual relationships, are being sought by gay lobbyists bent on reducing discrimination in a major anti-homophobia push in the state's schools, News Ltd reports.

But Department of Education and Training director-general Michael Coutts-Trotter says there is no move to stop using terms such as boyfriend, girlfriend, mum or dad in public school classrooms.

Media reports that there are moves to stop using these terms are "simply wrong", Mr Coutts-Trotter said in a statement.

"Public schools do not tolerate discrimination of any kind, whether on the grounds of religion, race, disability, gender or sexual preference," he said.

"Schools have to be sanctuaries for children; they must be free of any sort of discrimination, bullying or harassment.

"However, this does not include imposing a new politically correct language in schools."

The NSW government should put school maintenance and control of cyber-bullying ahead of the gay lobby's politically correct agenda, the opposition says.

Nationals leader Andrew Stoner has attacked Premier Morris Iemma and the Department of Education over an anti-homophobia conference, saying the issue is not a pressing one for NSW schools.

The conference, titled 'That's So Gay' and described as an exploration of "strategies to address homophobia and affirm sexual diversity in educational settings", was opened by Mr Coutts-Trotter on Wednesday.

"If the Iemma government showed the same enthusiasm for fixing the $82 million maintenance backlog as it does in pushing a politically correct agenda, then our schools would be much better off," Mr Stoner told reporters.

"No one is disagreeing with the fact that students shouldn't discriminate against anyone, but how far is this going to go?

"Parents who choose NSW education want their children to be taught a commonsense curriculum."

Cyber-bullying was a more widespread problem than homophobic discrimination in schools, Mr Stoner said.

"If we're going to get to basic priorities then stamp out bullying, all forms of bullying, whether it's homophobic or not," he said.
