Is Commerce right for me?
« on: December 19, 2008, 09:09:37 am »
I'm just wondering if a student who is pretty bad at maths would have a hard time doing Commerce. I ended up with a 29 for Methods (I was expecting no more than a 30) and though I am over the prerequisite of 25, 29 still indicates that I am below state average. I don't really have an excuse for my bad score either, I guess that's the consequence of being constantly 2 chapters behind and only investing about an hour to do the exercises every week.

So, for someone like me, do you think i'll struggle with Commerce which has a pretty heavy maths load, so I've heard? I want to major in management/human resources which will have less maths, but I imagine that some sort of economics/mathsy subject will be inevitable, especially in first year. I am very willing to put effort in and work my magic (lol) but I do have to say that I am, overall, a poor maths student.

So, what do you think? I'm pretty set on doing it, but... I do have my doubts. Please post your thoughts!

I think that rules you out of actuarial studies (I think the person at the open day said if you got 38+ in specialist, you'd be able to do it). The rest, I'm not so sure. I think they design prerequisites so that the people who can meet them will be able to manage in that course, so I reckon you should go for it.

Where are you planning to go, btw?

Thanks :)

I still don't know where to go. I was pretty set on Monash to do Commerce/Arts because i'd like to persue studies which is at least 50% Arts, but family friends reckon Commerce at Melbourne is better. I'm not against that, but I ideally wanted to study equal contact hours of both, and even though the new model offers the bredth subjects my interest still lies primarily in Arts. They like Melbourne because it is more prestigious and you can complete BA of Commerce + a masters degree all within 5 years.

I have the score to get into both the courses - 97.30. I'm just liking Comm/Arts more because I get 2 degrees done in 4 years, get to study Arts and Monash Clayton is but 15 mins by bus from my place :P I'm not sure about Masters at Clayton, haven't really read into it, maybe I should do that soon.

I think go for Comm/Arts, which is what you want to do. Also, if you find out then if commerce is too mathsy for you, then you can drop it quite easily and just do arts.

But don't be afraid of maths! I'm not the best maths student, but dealing with maths isn't necessarily THAT bad. Just apply yourself and don't dismiss it as 'too hard' before you begin, you might surprise yourself.

Human Resources/Management isn't as taxing as accounting in order to get accredited, so I think you'd have a third of your course that you can dedicate to Arts at Melbourne. But yeah, that's only one major.

Did you get a scholarship at Monash? If you did, that's an awful lot of pluses for Monash. If you do decide to go to Monash, I'll probably see you there. :)

Nope, no scholarship there, but my heart still belongs to Monash <3 lol! Yeah, I think i'll keep Comm/Arts as my first preference then. Thanks for the advice, guys! And Eriny, i'll definitely give maths another go before I deem it too difficult and give up on it. That's what happened to me with chem/methods and boy, the consequences aren't nice (study scores of 30 and 29 respectively) :P I actually enjoyed methods towards the end, just sucked at it, haha.

Ok, if I can successfully convince my mother, Comm/Arts at Monash it is :P

Not even with a 97.3? Woah..  Maybe you'll get one in the second round.

Good luck with convincing your mum!

If you are intending to study Economics, Finance or Actuarial Studies then yes.

If you plan on doing Management and Marketing subjects maybe not as much, but at Melb at least, it is compulsory to do certain quantitative subjects.

Depends in which area specifically you are talking about.

I was surprised to the max at my maths scores! A 30 in methods with D's in SACs? I was pretty damn happy! XD... It wasn't actually too bad, I was just dreading it in class all the time, and surprised myself quite a bit with the results!
