This has plagued me for the last few days. I've actually had to resort to physically yanking out my Linux HDD so that it would install. In fact, it wouldn't even let me partition the drive. mark_alec was right, the Vista PE is horrible.

Now comes the interesting part...getting them to dual boot...

While setting up the box, I was reading up on the new GTX 280.

Found the CD...but Vista's bootloader won't go away...sigh, the perils of two drives.

Ok. I have used EasyBCD with NeoGrub to boot into Linux. It works. Most of the tutes online don't consider the possibility of two MBRs in two hard drives (where the BIOS isn't very flexible in terms of selecting WHICH drive is primary). I must write one. When I have time.

So here's my bootloader to get into Linux (if someone can suggest something that'll cut NeoGRUB out of the equation, I'm all ears)...

Start > Windows Vista bootloader > NeoGRUB > GRUB > Ubuntu

cf.

Start > WV Vista bootloader > Vista (this is how most of your computers will [and should] be configured!)

Inefficient, yes...but it works.

At least you are using a decent operating system, one that is really doesn't care where your partitions are, and certainly doesn't disable useful features because you didn't pay for the 'Ultimate' edition.

Heh, yeah...still need it for games though.

This setup was 'different' I guess, due to the use of two physical drives and GRUB in the Linux drive never actually being reachable - something that I just had to work around (the problem would be at the BIOS level?) by chainloading GRUB into the Windows boot loader using NeoGRUB.
