i think its mostly a load of crap. when two people from different unis interview for a job, the employee is gunna hire whoever will be best suited for the job, who has better attributes and is going to be more valuable. they aren't gunna give a toss which uni they went to. why would they hire somebody from UoM, when the guy that went to VU is going to be a better assett to the company? they wouldnt.

Well... ah that is a very rare case. Most places will prefer a UoM/MU student over a VU student.
That's why I'm trying to do courses outside my course to enhance my chances of getting a job :) I've been doing some thinking and I doubt I want to do first year uni AGAIN! so I'll stick with VU :)

no, it is not 'very rare'. THEY WILL HIRE THE BETTER PERSON, NOT THE PERSON THAT WENT TO UOM.

however you could argue that the people that get into UoM in the first place are smarter and more determined etc...

put yourself in the employee's shoes, then have another think.

they're going to prefer a person that went to UoM? sure. but they are going to prefer a person that suits the job and will earn their company money, even more.
Don't you mean employer?
Anyways If I were an employer I'd want someone who could get the job done in the most efficient and effective way possible, so experience would be a key factor. However you would think or assume that the student from UoM would be more qualified for the job, as it's really hard to get into UoM, and staying there is also quite difficult, but I don't know, it really depends on the situation at hand. :)

If I was an employer and I had 100 applications to scan through, I would probably use which uni attended to shorten down applicants.

I've heard of certain companies that just throw out the CVs of people whose degrees aren't from Group of Eight universities.
VCE 2006
PhB (Hons) (Sc), ANU, 2007-2010
MPhil, ANU, 2011-2012
PhD, Princeton, 2012-2017
Research Associate, University College London, 2017-2020
Assistant Professor, University of Virginia, 2020-

Feel free to ask me about (advanced) mathematics.

I'll be looking for companies who don't choose their employees through that method :P

well if you had person A who was BRILLIANT for the job and person B who was awful, you would obviously hire person A regardless of their uni

i think the point is more if person A and B are very close in terms of their interview, employers are more likely to choose the Go8 graduate than the vicuni grad

aaaaaaand i don't mean to offend, i think it's wrong, but that's just the way it works. oh well

I guess you're right in saying that. However not all companies would do that... I'm already offered a job at a firm once I graduate.... and it's not due to my degree.. it's due to my Accounting Software experience. So there is still hope out there for those who don't attend the top universities :) [Note: I was offered this job today, and I don't know if I'll take up this offer yet, though the idea of making partner a couple of years after working there is tempting :o :P]

I don't think degrees from there will be worth the paper they are written on (it's such a shame :( )

It's very difficult to find companies like that, though. :(

^ particularly VU. It has a bad reputation when you compare it to other uni's. Maybe cause of the low ENTER requirements?
(no offence intended)
