what are the advantages in doing further?
Advantage:
The subject is relatively easy.
The actual content isn't hard what-so-ever- some say year 10 math (except for the matrix section).
Not an extra burden on your, already tough, year 12 schedual.
There's not really many advantages in VCE subjects, especially further, other than it's a quite do-able subject. Cant think of anymore...sorry

Disadvantage (while im at it): Given its quite do-able nature, the one disadvantage that comes to mind is its competitive nature. I think it was the second most popular subject in VCE Units 3 and 4,  and hence, to score well, you must have an almost perfect score in both exams. The logic here is: Everybody finds further easy, but not everybody gets 45+. The question must be asked, will you be able to hold enthusiasm for a subject that throws very little challanges at you during the year, and would you be able to hold your nerve and make MINIMAL mistakes on VCAA's rather absurd exams? If yes, then go for it. But just because the subject's content is easy, doesn't mean it's easier to score well in it.

Quote
On A Side Note:
It is imperative for students understand, that picking up Further because of its ‘easiness’ will not help your ENTER in anyway. As you might already know, Further is a subject that scales down, and has its Mean Study Score at roughly 27. This means that, although it may be ‘easy’ to achieve 35 in Further, the scaling of the subject ensures that it will scale down to ~32 or 33. This 32 can be achieved through many other subjects, and can even be achieved from a 25 in Methods (CAS). So in the end, a 35 in Further, is relative to a 25 in Methods (CAS). Hence, if selecting Further Maths because its assumed ‘easiness’ then I would seriously hope you reconsider.

One last thing, further scales DOWN, so yeah- think wisely if you're going to pick up the subject for its 'supposed' easiness.

hey guys, here's the world data (for anybody else that wanted it). Just put it up just incase i dont visit frequently during the year. GL again.

One question, how do you know the sac will be on this data for all schools?

Back when i was doing FM, which was 2007, there were big discussions- on BoS- regarding the first Further sac. Everybody seemed to be always complaining about its length, and tedious nature. So i asked what SAC they were talking about, and MOST of the replies said that it was this SAC, and that, for a few years now, schools all over Victoria have been using the some one. So yeah, as a rough estimate, i reckon 9/10 schools use this data to form their first assessment task.
Why do you ask Dan? Considering you undertook further in '08, did you get the same SAC, or a different one?

Nah ours was different and I know our teachers change it each year. If they didn't I could just give someone my SAC from last year.
2008 - Methods (36), Further (44), Physics (34)
2009 - English Language (37), Chem (29), Specialist (27), P.E. (42)
Enter - 94.85

Why did i suddenly get chills from reading this. How tricky is the exam anyway?

I am an average methods student and will do everything to get a 94 ENTER next year (will have tutorials)

How hard is further? because I'm scared of making mistakes and I'm one of those types that gets the easiest crap wrong because of my silly mistakes. So what should i expect? year 9, 10 maths?

I saw an exam sample and it was pretty easy. but sometimes i hate being confident

IMO easier than yr 10 maths but there's new concepts such as matrices but their fairly easy if you do the work.

Yeah if you do methods then you would have come across matrices. Definitely do matrices, easiest module i reckon.
Networks is an  annoying module though.

seeing as you do methods, you should find the linear module really easy. So, matrices and linear, the third im not sure depends what you like.

Just try to get a perfect score in both exams and high marks in all sacs and sure, you could get 47+. Anything is possible.
