Hey,
Was wondering if anyone could reccommend a good PC microphone, where to get it from and how much it costs.
I preferably want it to be decent for singing although I aint expecting something flash or professional cause its just a PC mic and not a proper singing mic.
I got a friend whos got a proper set up and his stuff sounds good (hes a rapper thou)... i just want a fairly cheap (tops $50 bucks?) mic until I decide to get some proper equipment

Thanks

You should start building up now.

Look out for some cheaper studio brands such as Beyerdynamic, AKG, Shure or, if you're feeling cheap-ish, Sennhiser (sp?)

As for what type? Dynamic mics would be the best bet for your price range. If you can afford it, get a condenser - but don't skimp on price for these ones (they can be really good, but also really really shit).

But aren't these sorta mics like proper mics? not PC mics? causeif you get proper mics woouldnt you need 'pre-amp's or something... i did a bit of reading up but it confused the fuck outta me.

i need an idiot proof explanation of what i need and what its gonna cost me aprox lol

Yeah, you'll need to put those sorts of mics into something that can drive them with phantom power. Typically not a computer..

You should seriously look at getting a headset. It would be handy to record with (play it in your phones and then layer your sound onto the music).

Try www.headphones.com.au. I bought a set of Beyerdynamic headphones + mic there, and it's quite a sweet set for $180 or so.

recording half well is pretty damn expensive, sadly. JTS make good, cheap copies of better known (ie shure) mics. try and find their sm58 copy, tis quite good. then get a lead and adaptor to fit it into the computer, and you'll be recording high school musical covers in no time.

You'd need a jack to convert between inputs. Also, I'm not sure if your computer will be able to drive it on it's own...but it's a cheap buy that's not too bad at all...

Zoom H2 - I've heard some samples and it sounds BLOODY awesome. It's a portable stereo mic with very interesting specs (and uses standard SD memory). $300, though, but it's a good investment particularly if you're planning on live recording with multiple instruments (because, due to it being a stereo mic, you'll gain the 'perception' of being there rather than having the same sound replicated through both ears (mono)).
