Elementary has been getting really good. I'm a long time reader of the Sherlock Holmes book and associated non-cannon works (i like anything with detectives, i'm also taking suggestions).
I find it more enjoyable and entertaining than BBC Sherlock. I think BBC Sherlock is deliberately quirky which i really don't like but i can understand how they create a fandom around it. It's 3 episode series dont allow much in the way of character development either. Elementary has weekly episodes which allows far more slow progression, details to be fleshed out and character development. I also like the progressive idea behind having a female Watson as well.
On the same topic, i also quite liked The Dresden Files where he is a gritty, hardboiled supernatural detective. He solves supernatural cases the police department cant but he is rough around the edges which makes all the difference to be.
Lately i'm also re-watching old Seinfeld episodes. I know its apparently a show about nothing but it's rather entertaining and a lot of the scenarios are very believable and kind of speak to the human condition (i'm getting all philosophical in here). At the same time, it's also interesting to note how a lot of things have changed since the 90s, even though they weren't all that long ago. For example, George leaves an angry message on someones answering machine and they break into her apartment to erase it before she gets back. These days it would go straight to your phone voicemail and you'd hear it instantly.
Also watching House of Cards. It's a political drama, anyone who likes politics will like this. I really enjoy the cinematography and direction style on an artistic level as well. Some people tell me its a little like West Wing but i've never seen this show, worth watching?
I'm also going through documentaries by Anthony Bourdain. He's a famous chef and does blended travel/food documentaries which i find quite interesting. He did one on Melbourne with Matt Preston before he was TV famous which is great to watch (Matt Preston is a long time newspaper writer though).
Drugs Inc is also a great documentary that looks at all angles of the drug trade - Users, Distributors and police. It's quite eye opening.
