I don't keep up to date with computers and hardware, but I think these are pretty bitching:

A Dell is nice. Good quality for its price.
If you're looking for one JUST for school, get a 'netbook'. These are basically miniature laptops, able to do all the school stuff + surf the net but not really capable of playing games.
The netbooks can start somewhere like $500 (not too sure) so it's not too bad of an investment for a/two school year(s).
Get a desktop for gaming. ;)

Dell laptops, in my experience are pretty good. You do pay a bit of a premium for (arguably not good value) service, though.

Toshibas are cheaper and will do the job (I own one myself).

ASUS are cheaper still and will also do the job (we own 2).

Hah, I have a 24" Dell Monitor, and it's awesome.

Take a look at MSY's collection. See if anything looks within your budget and post the specs here.

pro tip:
do not buy a laptop for year 12.
you don't need it. Sure it would be useful for random crap, but trust me... you're 99 times better off without one.

STAY AWAY!.
especially with those subjects, you could argue that it would be helpful for English and PE
but you will perform so much better if you dont get one

i must say that for ten years in the computer industry, http://www.msy.com.au/ is a gut wrenchingly awful looking web site!

But for what they don't spend on web design, the savings get passed on to you.

(similar non-investment also occurs to the customer service there, but that's another story).
