Because what they've been talking about on the TV. Saying how its so good to have a black president etc. It should be about having a good president in, whiuch he might be, but lay off on the whole talk on race; it shouldnt even be a factor.
People didn't vote for him purely because he's black, and its significant that he's the FIRST black president, not just that he's black. if you'd told someone 50 (or even much later) years ago that the USA would have a black president, they would have probably laughed.

I don't see any significance in it. It's just another pre-determined characteristic.
In that case every new president would be the FIRST (insert defining characteristic) president.
But because he's is black it has to be made into some sorta define his whole campaign? Wouldnt you hate to have been president and be remembered as 'the black guy' not 'the guy who made a difference'?

That's what I'm talkng about. It shouldnt be dwelled on that he's black. It gets in the way of the job

Costargh, this is not just any pre-determined characteristic. This is a pre-determined characteristic that was the object of oppression for many years. Obama's election to President signifies that the USA has moved beyond judging people by their colour and instead vote on the content of character.

Obama, the American people decided, was the better candidate. It was not out of sympathy, it was because they liked what he had to offer better. He energised the youth into voting and delivered policy that addressed the economic concerns of his constituency.

What is amazing is that a black man was finally able to reach across racial lines and do this. That he was treated like any other candidate would be. That people decided that race no longer mattered. That is the symbolism of this election. Only 40 years ago, black people gained equality of human rights in America. This represents a massive step forward in America. To not comment on the significance of this historical event would be ludicrous.

ah yes, i do agree that it shouldn't be dwelled on. i don't think thats what defined his whole campaign though.

Exactly right. Most people didn't vote for Obama BECAUSE of his race. They are merely pointing out it is a good sign that a black man is president. Rejoicing for the state of equality in their country. According to the statistics, the extra amount of blacks that voted for Obama was not very significant. I also imagine the white rednecks voting AGAINST obama because of his colour and middle name would have negated, if not surpassed, this minor advantage.

It doesnt represent anything to me. It represents another guy in a suit trying to change the world, one pointless government at a time.

You can only assume that he 'reached across racial lines.'
Perhaps there were just never any good 'black' candidates.

I hope someone with syphilis gets elected the next president and it can be a great day for the syphilis society who are so oppressed.

Again... the amount of rednecks voting against Obama because they think he is a terrorist (see: Hussein) or merely because he is black would have surpassed those voting merely for his black skin.

Yeh so what. Every politician would have large masses voting against them. Would you say black people voting against McCain or any other white person should now be called 'suppression'?

An election is an election. It should be about who offers the country the most. It should be a day rejoiced for Americans as being a day where a man could take over and change America for the better. Not "Oh yay blacks beat whites after years of oppression."

Costa, you're being ignorant. You don't seem to grasp the gravity of this situation. I would say it is because as you have stated, you are simply apathetic to the situation. But just because you are apathetic to the significance of the event does not mean it is insignificant.

You are simply desensitised to its meaning. That is fine, and you should not be blamed for that, these are problems from a different world to the one that you know. But to issue a blanket statement that this day is of no significance in terms of Barack Obama's skin colour is mind-blowingly ignorant and inconsiderate, when it clearly means so much to so many people. Simply look at the news footage today. Millions of Americans, black, white, hispanic etc. were crying with joy over the reaffirmation that the American dream was still alive and able to be realised by all, no matter their pre-determined genetics.

I advise you to rethink your statements in this post.

I'm so glad Obama won. He's amazing. And could you imagine Sarah Palin as President? (Seeing as John McCain is so old he'll probably have a heart attack in office)

I agree that the fact that he's black shouldn't bear weight on his election or campaign, though it was inevitable. There was a documentary on ABC last night about Ohio's position in the election, and people openly said on camera that they wouldn't vote for Obama for the sole reason that he's black and others said that they were voting for him solely because he was black.

It should be overlooked, but it can't by a lot of people because it's considered a great milestone.
