Your opinion on Schoolies.

VCE years are at an end for year 12s. So what are your opinions on schoolies?
Do you support them? Are you an eager attendee?

I have a few thoughts, mostly negative ones, about this wild partying.

After visiting BoS and seeing their discussion there, I laugh on the inside at them. Reminds me why I moved here.

Oh and please refrain from posting crap like this:

So long as they don't do anything bad to me, I have no qualms about it :P

It could go wrong.
Guys: Unwanted brawls and general violence.
Girls: Being sexually mistreated, making bad decisions under the influence of alcohol.
Everyone: Drugs, alcohol, STDs, no authority can backfire

yeah it could go wrong. the same way that the bus you ride to uni could explode, you trip in the shower and get brain damage, or your house catches fire.

generally, if you dont look for violence, it won't come to you.
theres always that off chance of an unprovoked bashing - but seriously, theres gunna be a million kids around you, cops everywhere - unless you look for trouble, you'll be fine.

bad decisions under alcohol? that can happen anywhere, know your limits - and if you're not retarded, then you wont do anything stupid.

just because there is no authority, doesn't mean you have to be stupid and do dangerous things. Again, unless you're an idiot, you'll be fine.

What's wrong with a little risk in the first place?
Do you wanna turn 50, look at yourself - you've got a wife and two kids in a 3 bedroom house in the suburbs and a commodore and be glad that you've taken the safe option? theres so much more to life, and so much fun to be had.

Keep an open mind, enjoy life. when you die its over - you've got an infinite amount of years to be nothing.

Be mature, be smart - and the chances of things going wrong are no different to everyday life.

Why would you say something like this? Now I just have strange thoughts in my head about this happening to me (especially the shower one). :(

It's clear that the risks are higher, simply by looking at the statistics, but each person makes their own assessments about the potential risks and the benefits of going (having a blast).

You say it yourself - unprovoked attacks can and do happen.

I think most reasonable people would quantify the risk of the bus exploding on the way to uni to be far less than getting beaten up at schoolies, but each to their own. If you want to go out on a risky activity such as schoolies, because you feel that the payoff from it overcomes to risk then so be it. If you're risk-averse and would prefer to stay home, that's fine too.

Regarding alcohol consumption, couldn't agree more - know your limits and reduce your risk of something stupid happening.

My stance is basically one of non-interference. You work out the risk and take it if you dare.

i think it would be a really sad thing for a person not to take part in the celebration just because of the 'risk'

and the thing about statistics, is they dont tell us that the 5 guys that ended up in hospital with broken bones and brain damage were calling people names in the street, and provoking others that were already drunk

and i mean, look at the statistics:
"1700 road deaths each year in Australia"
thats 4.66 per day.
schoolies week (or 2-3 weeks) its somewhere in the range of 33 to 97 deaths in the time that we're at schoolies.
how many people die at schoolies?

seems to me that driving in a car is riskier that going to schoolies.

and remember, unprovoked attacks DO HAPPEN, however the chance is VERY VERY low probably the about the same as your bus exploding.

its pretty simple guys - dont provoke, you stay alive.

im pretty cool about the whole schoolies gig. i think its a good chance to just chill out...but i hate the whole toolies scene, so they better keep the hell away!
for my schoolies, im going with 2 friends to geelong, its more of a little holiday for us, and we will just visit our friends in torquay n lorne during the day.
personally, i would hate to go to qld. i think its a bit dangerous, but just as long as everyone going on schoolies is sensible and responsible, then im fine with it!!! : )

yeah it could go wrong. the same way that the bus you ride to uni could explode, you trip in the shower and get brain damage, or your house catches fire.
The examples you have given have a much lower risk of happening than something going wrong at schoolies.

generally, if you dont look for violence, it won't come to you.
theres always that off chance of an unprovoked bashing - but seriously, theres gunna be a million kids around you, cops everywhere - unless you look for trouble, you'll be fine.
That's the thing. There are "a million kids", much harder to manage. The whole police force isn't going to be supervising schoolies and with a million kids, it makes their job a lot harder. You don't have to look for trouble to get into trouble.

What's wrong with a little risk in the first place?
Do you wanna turn 50, look at yourself - you've got a wife and two kids in a 3 bedroom house in the suburbs and a commodore and be glad that you've taken the safe option? theres so much more to life, and so much fun to be had.

Think immediate situation. I'm not talking about never going out into the world and experience everything there is to be experienced. I'm talking about schoolies.
I'd much rather sacrifice a few nights' fun of risky partying than to risk becoming a vegetable all my life.

and the thing about statistics, is they dont tell us that the 5 guys that ended up in hospital with broken bones and brain damage were calling people names in the street, and provoking others that were already drunk
That's the thing. You're in high spirits, you feel like you're on top of the world and you've got friends to back you up. A lot of people feel the same way. So, they go out calling names and provoking people for fun only to underestimate the consequences.

and i mean, look at the statistics:
"1700 road deaths each year in Australia"
thats 4.66 per day.
schoolies week (or 2-3 weeks) its somewhere in the range of 33 to 97 deaths in the time that we're at schoolies.
how many people die at schoolies?
seems to me that driving in a car is riskier that going to schoolies.
That statistic is a bad one to use.
There are, what, 21 or 22 million Australian residents? How can you use that to compare with the number of people at schoolies?
