Which one is better? And why?
Price wise, which one gives u more bang for ur buck?

Where can I get the best deals (good quality for good price) for plasmas and lcds?

also, surround sound essential or not essential?

Go for a >42 inch Sony Bravia LCD. JB HI-FI and The Good Guys would probaly get you the best deals.

Actually, I think a plasma gives better picture, particularly for sports - as they have a faster response time than LCD's.
Plasmas are generally much cheaper.

For Plasmas, I would advise to look at the Panasonic Viera models.

For LCDs, if you decide to go that way, look at the Samsung and Sony models. :)

Everything you need to know by skimming through it.

I wouldn't say surround sound is absolutely essential but hey if you have the money then go for it.
If you're really into your movies and whatnot, surround sound is a good idea.

I would do some research on technology websites and online forums (such as whirlpool.net.au and dtvforum.info) then I would decide on my budget. Search for the best prices on the model using the internet (try sites like staticice.com.au) and then get my nearest store to price match. That's generally what I did for the LCD we have at home.

We bought the kdl-46x3100 which is similar to this except for the bezel: http://www.cnet.com.au/tvs/lcd/0,239035307,339283717,00.htm

Might as well get a 5.1 surround system.

Try buying after christmas too. Basic all-in-one surround systems are available at very cheap prices, but often you do get what you pay for. The right surround sound system depends also on the size of the room, and where you can place the speakers

BTW; you'll get much better value with kit speakers - but you'd have to be willing to do some DIY work.
