Ok here's my problem.

I have a laptop not working due to the video card. Hard drive is fine. How do I remove my hard drive and backup the files within?

I don't get it...why do you need to remove your hard disk to backup the files?

Edit: I see...I feel pretty stupid now

His video card doesn't work, and hence he can't see anything when he boots up the computer, making it quite hard to backup. And yeh, laptops aren't quite as easy to crack open as towers, so I wouldn't advise going ahead and trying if it's even possible. You're best to just take it to repairs and ask them to ensure that they don't wipe the HDD clean while they're replacing the video card.

Because his graphics card is screwy and thus isn't able to access his hard drive using the laptop.

But answering your question, Firstly you'll have to unscrew your laptop and take out the hard drive. It should be easily accessed without tampering the actual motherboard.
Make note if it's a SATA or IDE connection. Then, you'll have to buy an external 2.5 inch case (roughtly $20, if I recall correctly) to fit your hard drive, which then can be used as an external hard drive (it comes with a usb adapter externally). Connect this to a desktop PC and off you go!

can't you connect the sara\ide port directly to the motherboard?

Probably, but that involves opening up the desktop tower and a bit of a hassle if edmund372 isn't great with this sort of stuff.

Plus, on personal experience, I've found my little external 2.5 inch enclosure to be quite handy (I had to buy one as I was in a situation similar to edmund372), at the most random of times! :)

Aaah.. Where would I be able to get one of those? At Dicksmith's or JB HiFi perhaps?

I'm not sure, but depending on where you live, there's MSY (www.msy.com.au) in Clayton (South East Suburbs), or CPL (www.cpl.net.au) which has two stores - one near Monash University and the other within the city.

Otherwise, there are local "swap meets" where you might pick up a bargin, but MSY and CPL are the cheapest stores I have encountered to date.

Thanks! I live in the city so I would be going to the city branch. Does that device have a name?

It's been a long time since I've gotten mine, but if I'm correct, look under the "enclosure and racks" heading in the green guide parts list PDF, and look at the Vantec Nextstar 3 2.5" Lite IDE - U2, or Vantec 2.5" SATA to USB, all prices around $20 - $30.

Hope I'm right! :P

Ps. you can ask the seller and explain what you want, they should be able to provide a bit of help :)

I checked the internet and there seems to be different sizes - one with 3.5"? Or are all hard disks 2.5"?

I found a link:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817145137

Would this size fit all hard disks?

I believe full sized desktop computers use 3.5", laptops use 2.5", so you'll be looking at the 2.5"
