Well I personally felt insulted with Clannad, it made you go through episode and episode of things getting crap then better and then crap again THEN it was like, hey, let's just dump all that and start again.
It felt like a sell out, like lots of Hollywood remakes of novels. You just wait for the American remake of Deathnote, $100,000,000 on Light surviving.
Haruhi is better (in my opinion, which is obviously how I rate them) because it has an interesting storyline and lots of comedy elements, similar to Clannad original season. It should be noted, that had Clannad ~AS~ ended WITHOUT the events of ep22, it probably would have gotten 10/10.
Also, Haruhi is not finished (even novel wise), depending on how (or if) it ends, I'll definitely change my mind.
Clannad ~AS~ had the best theme of any anime ive seen. The importance of relationships on stray individuals, a good backdrop with which to focus. Every episode developed characters, a show in which there are about ~10 characters who each have more development than most series main characters have throughout their entire respective anime is truly amazing.
The animation quality is the best of any anime that has ever been released. The soundtrack including op/ed are a perfect suit to the anime and really brings out emotions that are true to the anime. The insert songs fit the mood perfectly for each situation. The characters are the best in any anime ive ever seen (the amount of characters that play a key role, and all of them are excellent, well developed and none are annoying) is a fantastic achievement. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will be in awe. The feelings you get from watching ~AS~ are the most diverse of any anime ive seen so far, for a romance it covers so much. For ~AS~ not to be rated 10, I wudnt be able to rate any other anime a 10 simply because I feel that nothing comes close to ~AS~ in terms its brilliance in every sector in which it can be broken down to. It may be episodic at times but no episode can be considered filler. The ending may have been a classic dues ex machina style ending which detracts from the feelings conjured up in the previous 3-4 episodes but I think it simply comes down to a lack of understanding of the build up to the ending. Maybe if you read more articles on the significance of the ending u would feel differently. There are worse things than one questionable ep, no anime ive ever seen has all flawless eps but that doesnt mean it isnt worthy of a 10 unless your extremely harsh on an anime, but considering you could give code geass a 10 which had a far more rushed ending and the second season was no where near the level of the first season, then you dont seem to be a harsh in general.
I loved Code Geass because of the animation, epic storyline, awesome soundtrack and awesome open ending, perfect 10. (should be noted I don't mind filler episodes in the slightest)
I agree with most of your review of Clannad, music was great, animation great and a fantastic mix of genres.
My problem comes with character development. I was disappointed they dropped almost all characters in ~AS~, however I realised this was part of the storyline, as it was supposed to focus on Nagisa/Tomoya/Ushio. I thought Tomoya's character development was fantastic as he learnt how to be a father, especially when he grew to forgive and appreciate his own.
The ending screwed all that, hence why I would not call the series perfect.
Since finishing ~AS~ I have read quite a few articles, mainly to answer the remaining questions I have, but I stand by my choice. The ending was a sell out. Does not mean the rest of the series is ruined, I am just left disappointed (it also should be noted, I prefer dark or open endings)
In the end, 9/10 is great score...in fact, it's higher than the overall average of Clannad on My Anime List... by 0.01 xD
EDIT: apparently Air has a sad ending, I think I'll go with that next.
