Dubs are fine.  English Voice Actors=/=omgsucksz0rs.  The Death Note dub in particular is fairly good...

Hell, you even get cases where the dub is superior to the original.  Case in point->Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball Z...

Yeah, DBZ dub was way better.

But the rest... I'd stick with jap, they sound much better, or maybe I'm just used to subs now hah.

That's generally the case.  People tend to prefer the voices they originally heard, and nine out of ten times you will see the sub rather than the dub first.

Of course, there are some genuinely bad dubs.  I hate any dub which keeps in honorifics (-chan, -kun etc.) with a passion.

I am also a hater of the dubs.

It's the worst when characters magically change genders... perhaps gay cross-dressers are a bit too difficult for American audiences to grasp?

Examples pls.  Either it was:

a. In a kids' show and thus unsuitable for child audiences in the west.

b. A mistake.  It happens in Japanese shows too, eg. Yorouichi in Bleach was voiced by a man in her cat form because at that point, her true gender had not been revealed in the manga...

Sorry, but it just annoys me when people just openly hate dubs.

Sorry, but it just annoys me when people just openly hate dubs.

You've clearly never been tortured with an English episode of Sailor Moon.

I prefer Death Note in Japanese, but it's still okay in English... only because the translators didn't feel the need to completely destroy the storyline.

I dunno... perhaps 'hate' is too strong a word.
I definitely prefer English subs to English dubs though.
From experience, the English versions of shows seem to cut out all the good sub-stories and the little things that make anime appealing for people beyond childhood.

How bout Makoto sounding like Ash from (dubbed) Pokemon (a prepubescent boy played by a woman pretending to be a boy)?

Or Chibiusa?

Or Luna, Artemis and Diana?
Instead of it being Luna + Artemis = Diana (eventually), it's more like:
Old-Lady cat gets it on with Random-Male-American cat, who together produce Fking-Annoying cat.

Sorry XD
I only saw the episode a couple of days ago... the memory is still quite raw and painful.

Ok.  I think in this case, a distinction needs to be made between "English dubs" and "mainstream English dubs".  The "English dubs" I'm thinking of are as you seem to regard the Death Note dub, more or less direct translations from the Japanese versions usually done by studios such as Ocean and ADV.  "Mainstream English dubs", on the other hand, are the ones such as the Sailor Moon dub or the Yu-Gi-Oh dub which had to change aspects of the original series due to either censorship, cultural differences, or in some cases for commercial reasons.

Only highly popular Anime aimed towards adolescents/early teens (eg. Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh...) tend to suffer from "Mainstream English dub"-syndrome.  As such, in regards to your comment about appealing for people beyond childhood, you have to understand that these are kids' shows already; in Japan, they're aimed towards children, and in bringing them over to the Western world the big companies like FUNI and 4Kids are also trying to market them towards children.  If you really wanted maturity, you probably shouldn't be looking towards these Anime in the first place, basically.

Ironic, given that she's only called Serena in the dub...  If you were really a purist, I imagine you would be calling her "Usagi"...

*facepalm*

...I'll admit sometimes, the whole "mass-marketing" thing does reduce in some stupidity.  I enjoy the line about Raditz being "faster than the speed of light" in the DBZ Saban (I think) dub, given that it means he's faster than any other character in the show...XD

Still, tolerance.  Mass-market dubs simply have to appeal to 10 year olds, even if the original fans suffer in the process...
