A league sucks..........

jks

(waiting to be destroyed by costargh)
it does suck, end of story. EPL ftw. however, i do support victory based solely on the fact that i live in Victoria and melbourne victory represents me.

Being 'premiers' won't mean much if Melbourne don't win the final IMO.

But being premiers qualifies us automatically for the Asian Champions League

I realise that - and it's a good achievement to finish first. But if Melbourne lose in straight matches in the finals then I don't think finishing first means very much.

Geelong lost 1 match throughout the whole season leading up to the GF yet didn't win the flag, and their season has been considered a failure. Different sports and contexts, but I think the point remains valid. If Adelaide win the final, it's not going to mean much when you say "who cares we were premiers" is it?

I realise theres the ACL, but thats just my opinion. I think celebrations of finishing top are a little premature is all.

There's a difference. You cant compare Football and AFL.

In AFL you win the "MINOR" premiership if you finish on top of the ladder and the PREMIERSHIP if you win the play-offs.

In Football (A-league), you win the PREMIERSHIP if you finish on top of the ladder and the CHAMPIONSHIP if you win the playoffs.

I invite you to name me one top level football league in the world where finishing on top of the regular season ladder isn't the greatest achievement you can receive.

I know structurally things are differnt in Australia but historically, finishing on top of the ladder has always been the greatest achievement a team could make.

I think in the A-league the championship is deemed more glorious BUT there's nothing minor about the premiership.

I realise soccer is different to football.

You're right, finishing top of the table is the greatest achievement for almost all soccer leagues around the world. However, the fact that they have no finals series, while the A-League does, is a big factor.

Of course if you have no finals then finishing on top is the highest achievement possible. But here in Australia the A-League adopted a finals series(probably because Australians are "used" to finals in AFL, NRL etc). Therefore, winning the GF is in my opinion almost the only thing that matters if you want to be known as the best.

I think in the A-league the championship is deemed more glorious BUT there's nothing minor about the premiership.
This is what I don't understand/agree with. Coming from a football background where winning the GF is everything, it's all or nothing IMO.

I say we get rid of the whole concept of finals for a-league next season, the season will be extended with North Queensland and Gold Coast coming in as new teams anyway

Well done to MV.

The A-League is pathetic .  Maybe in another 55-60 years it will reach the standards of European football, but by then European football will improve , so the A-league will keep trying and trying, hence getting nowhere xD.

Also, the Asian Champions League is of very low standard, doesn't really mean much. UEFA Champions League is the real competition ;).

You cant compare the a-league with any leagues in Europe. A-leagues is only 4 seasons old and bound by salary caps, it doesn't have the finances and resources and it never will challenge the European leagues

Fuck the finals. Absolute waste of time if you ask me.

A cup play off would be much better. It allows smaller and traditional teams to have a chance at "playing with the best."

A-league gets so much attention and yet traditional clubs like Melbourne Croatia, South Melbourne, Preston Makedonia etc are ridiculed and critisized as being racist clubs etc.

The Football Federations at both state and Federal level need to wake up realise that if it wasn't for these clubs, the sport would not exist in this country.

We have alot to thank traditional clubs for!

BTW i am not a fan of any of the above clubs. I am a Melbourne Victory fan that is upset with the treatment of traditional clubs.

Totally agree with you. VPL teams have contributed so much yet they are forced to comprise so much to comply with the crap policies of FFA and FFV. Melbourne Croatia was forced to change its name to "Knights", bringing any non-Australian flags to foxtel cup games is also frowned upon by officials

and in the case of knights, you are not allowed to bring any flags or banners.
Add that to the rubbish that is being dished out from above saying that football is a family sport and "ethnics" are ruining it for the game.
IMO the game should be run by people in this country that have been fans for their whole life.
People like Tony Ising the founder of Melbourne Victory.
I whole heartedly believe that geoff lord has turned the whole operation of the club into a money hungry gimmick.
Then there are other owners like Con Constantine (owner of newcastle jets) who take it to the next level actually telling fans that they are pieces of shit and that if they don't like his rules they can get fucked.

1. Flags that have nothing to do with the club SHOULDNT be at game days ie. National flags at domestic league games whereby the flags only serve to incite ethnic tension.
2. Ethnics arent ruining the game because the FFA already got rid of the NSL.
3. I'd much rather have the system we have in place now where we have a RELATIVLELY strong domestic league thats run professionaly than the farce that was the NSL where it wasn't South Melbourne Vs Melbourne Knights; it was Greece Vs Croatia.
4. Goeff Lord has invested millions into the club. It's fair to say he'd want a return on investment. Wouldn't you?
5. Fans who ruin the game day experience for others with violent and inappropriate behavour ARE pieces of shit and ARENT true supporters and should get fucked.
