I have a suggestion!

English Languagers (i.e. I) want to represent stuff in International Phonetic Alphabet in the EL forum! Makes it so much easier than writing stuff out phonetically.

I have two proposed methods:
1. TIPA for LaTeX
2. enable HTML in posts, so that we can use decimal/hex numbers such as ŋ

I would just copy the symbols out from my word document, but I'm not sure they would display properly on everyone's monitors that way...

Sorry for butting in, but is it important to learn the IPA in English Lanugage?

It's in the study design, but it's pretty unlikely they'll ask you to represent something in IPA on the exam. After all, everyone pronounces words differently, and they've never done it before. However, I still learned all the monophthongs and diphthongs used in English, and used them in essays/SACs.

Oh, and apparently IPA impresses teachers/assessors.

Good idea, let's see what enwiabe thinks in terms of technical feasibility.

enwiabe thinks you need to ask Dan15 to implement it on the latex in his server as enwiabe doesn't have shell access on his server and cannot install latex locally. Dan15 very kindly parses all latex through his server and feeds us images back to show it. You'd need to talk to him. I don't think it's a very efficient use of his time, however, for a very limited pool of users and uses. I don't think it would be used enough to warrant the coding required to implement it. And no, HTML will not be enabled in posts. Ew.
