Principal finds 94 ecstasy tablets in 15-year-old's bag

A 15-year-old school boy has been charged with supplying drugs after nearly 100 ecstasy tablets were allegedly found in his school bag.

The principal at the boy's inner city school had noticed the boy arriving late for school about 11.30am yesterday, and demanded to search his bag.

The boy gave permission and police allege the principal found 94 tablets, believed to be ecstasy, of an estimated street value of around $3000.

Police were called to the school and they arrested the 15-year-old.

Police would not confirm the name of the school, but it was named by 2GB as St Mary's Cathedral College.

"It's a great tragedy for the parents that something like this should happen and come to the attention of police," said Inspector Brenton Lee from City Central police.

The boy was charged with supplying an indictable quantity of a prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and will face Bidura Children's Court today.

St Mary's Cathedral College has been contacted for comment.

The bit I've boldened in the story is what I want to discuss here.

WTF? Why has he been refused bail?

Isn't it usually because they're afraid the person would run away or something? I don't know, my law knowledge is not extensive.

Well probably the three most prominient reasons for not allowing bail (from my very limited understanding) would be:

1. Because you fear they may be a danger to society if they are released
2. They could skip bail
3. They may assist in hiding evidence or helping others get away

The only logical reason could be 3 that theyd not let him out on bail.

Might be 1. or 2. then?
He might be able to get more ecstasy tablets from wherever his source is and sell/give them to people?

But why would this 15 year old pose more of a threat than hard core gangland criminals who have multi-million dollar drug crops and still get bail? (I dont actually know of a specific instance where this has happened, but I know that they do get bail.)

Can't you put money on bail? So they can say like ... if I skip bail so-and-so would have to pay $2 million, or something

thats called a surety^^ and is basically that. its stupid that the boy would be denied bail, hes obviously not a danger to society, and if he has  a surety then it would be highly likely he would abscond.

this is rubbish! the whole purpose of bail is to safe gaurd the community from further criminal actions that may take place, prevent any chance of the accused from absconding and/or the individual may harm him/her self; in no way do i believe that his 15 year old boy would commit any of these. This is ridiculous and he should appeal. fuck the system, fuck the judge.

lol yer that is surety. But these guy should be let out on bail for less than 10K tbh, i mean HE IS 15 who just so happened to have 100 BIGGIES which is nothing compared to the drug/criminal charges that were laid on mokbel. That case in which Mokbel was arrested on Commonwealth charges in September 2005, saw him allegedly offending again while on bail, but again Mokbel was again granted bail in November 2005. shit system i tell ya.

"It's an extremely serious matter ... because of the number of tablets involved ... and the extremely serious allegation that it occurred on school premises," Magistrate Joan Baptie said.

"I have concerns in relation to the sophistication of this situation ... being a young person ... and the possibility there may be further offences."

what! is this magistrate on drugs?! sophistication of the matter... i see no sophistication there other than a kid with heap of biggies to which i know heap of mates who have access to em, even i do. And in regards to further offences, damn what more offences can he committ. oh wait hold on..

Despite the boy having no criminal record, prosecutor Darren Pearce opposed bail due to the seriousness of the offence.

"We have real concerns about what connections he may have ... in order to be in possession of such a quantity," he said.
this kid may be connected to the hell's angels, be scared people.. real scared.

Maybe the reason for refusing bail is that they'll think he'll just go and supply more drugs, which is dangerous to society (well, a tiny portion of it anyway)?

no supplying drugs ain't dangerous to society, it's dangerous for the police.
