Wireless Router
« on: April 06, 2009, 09:23:17 am »

Right now, I've got fixed broadband with a router so two other computers can go on the Internet.  Since laptops (the laptop has G-networking) are invading the household, I was thinking of buy a new router - this one being wireless.

I've got a two-storey house so I was wondering:

1.  Which sort of router should I be looking for in order to accommodate the house?
2.  Is there a specific brand that is really good?
3.  Where are those sort of routers the cheapest?

Not necessarily a good thing.

You'll need to do your own research, but use these as a guide:

802.11g

802.11n (draft)
http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wirelessrouters/tp/80211nprenhome.htm

General guide

As for where to buy? I recommend MSY

Thanks for the info.  I've done a bit of research and I was thinking of buying a Linksys Simultaneous Dual-N Band Wireless Router WRT610N

The only problem is that I've read some mixed reviews especially when people are saying that the connection keeps dropping.

most laptops (esp those that are more than 1 year old) probably don't have wireless-N capabilities, so there's no point bying a Dual-N Band router.

A cheap wireless G or wireless G rangemax should accomodate your needs, they are around $50 at MSY in clayton.

^ Good advice there.

However, draft-N devices are backwards compatible - but why spend more when you don't need to?

Personally, the highest I would go to would be a wireless N router. N1, draft-N, dual-N and the newer technologies are still new and need more development. It's almost like buying a new version of windows on the first day of release and... expecting it to work well :P

Thanks for the advice, Mao.  You're right on that because my current laptop only supports G.  The reason why I was thinking of N is because when I buy a laptop (that supports N) in the future, I would have the router.

Now that I think about it, I might do some more research into buying a wireless G.  I might research Netgear a bit more then and put aside any previous opinions I had of Linksys.

Define "break the bank", us tech nerds have a much higher price point for fancy bells and whistles than others do :P

Yes, it is a one storey house

Break the bank= More than $100

so something under 100 would be preferred
