I also went hmmmm when I first saw hard's preferences. There are plenty of people here who can comment on which unis may or may not be better so I'll just ask the following:

1) wondering why you have so many science subjects when you are more interested in law/commerce. Did you change your mind this year?

2) is travel an issue when deciding which uni to put down?

3) are you dead set on attending the 'prestigious' unis or are you happy to choose the best course for you?

4) if the Monash course is the one you are super keen on, you should ensure you put some other Monash courses in your preferences too. Makes it easier to transfer across in case you don't get your first preference

5) did you attend any open days this year to get a feel for each uni and speak to current students? If not, you can still contact them to find out information. Also, check out the course descriptions and what subjects are offered on their websites.

The good thing is that for the type of courses you are applying for there are usually no extra requirements. Thus, you should have no difficulties changing your preferences either in the change of preference start of term 4 or the one after your results are released.

can someone help me decide whats the best for law and/or commerce, i.e. what courses and which uni.

In regards to commerce/law, if you want to stay in Victoria, then Monash wins hands down. If you don't mind going interstate, ANU is apparently excellent for law (don't be fooled by its lower ENTER requirement).

If you think you'll get good marks in uni/the LSAT, then go to UoM and do commerce --> JD pathway. This is more risky though, especially if your ENTER was high enough to get into undergraduate law. I also think the undergraduate law structure is better than the JD. JD is more accelerated hence more stressful and less space to do electives.

Just from the law perspective (because I know nothing about commerce), I would have -
1) Monash or ANU law
2) Deakin law
3) La Trobe law or RMIT law
4) Melbourne Model JD pathway
5) VU law

I have a friend doing Commerce/Law at Deakin - he got 96 and didn't get into monash. He loves it he's doing really well. I hear it's the next best thing after monash.  I think with good grades its still a very reputable degree at Deakin (Y)

I reckon it would be easier to do an internal transfer from another course at Monash into law.E.g Arts first year then Arts/Law the next. I went to the open day and the faculty staff said that 2/3 of the law intake is from transfers from other courses.

I think it's much easier and much less hassle to transfer internally. If you're transferring between unis there's all those issues of credit points, equivalent subjects etc. etc. etc.

For example I know someone who transferred from first year commerce/law at VU to Monash, and had to repeat first year law because VU's degree wasn't up to scratch. So she basically wasted a year ...

Don't know about Deakin or La Trobe though

There is no need to reduce VU's degree to that. Yes, it may not be as prestigious or versatile as a Monash or Deakin degree, but there are many people who are desperate to study law who simply will not achieve the required scores to study it at a top university. It really is not necessary to make such bold sweeping statements about VU, especially when you clearly have no idea what your talking about. I'm sure with excellent grades there would be a number law firms who would employ VU law grads. Have faith VU Prospectives, don't despair when reading such ridiculous blanket statements.

As far as I know, employers don't worry too much over the university that you went to. As long as you do well on the interview, have a decent resume/marks, I think it would be the same. Some evidence of you showing initiative would go a long way too.
