Timetabling.
Where drivers change over.
Other basic operational decisions.

Information re: these being source of inefficiency?

From a Melbourne University Public Transport expert. Read it a few months back.

That is very unsatisfying.  Very unsatisfying.

Alternatively:

I have a wonderful proof of this proposition, but this thread is too small to contain it.

How does one become a 'Public Transport expert'?

Oh well, you'll get over it.

If you really want to find the article I'm sure google would be more than kind to you. For me, I've already read it.

I'm just pointing out, it's useless describing something you've read and then using that to make conclusions when you can't present the same material for others to read.

It's not useless as you now know what I have read. If you wish to seek validation of what I have read be my guest and use google.

Have you ever written an essay and referenced by stating 'the appropriate resources can easily be found in the library'?

I assume not, because such a thing would be worthy of no marks whatsoever.  If you want to use evidence to present a point of view, don't be vague about it, provide the evidence.  Then what you say can be accurately judged.

Particularly of interest to anyone who does Business Management (might come in handy as an example or for a SAC etc.), look here. I just jumped straight to the conclusion, but there's a lot on change management and how put simply, Connex's management is incapable of doing this. And as for evidence dcc, "The real deficiency is with ‘organisational infrastructure’, not physical infrastructure; as Vuchic says". The article goes on to show that timetabling inefficiencies which make life easier for the company and its drivers have just been allowed to be carried over as any attempts at change are futile inside an inefficient organisation like Connex. Hopefully MTM can rectify such inefficiencies.

Sorry, I wasn't aware that I was writing an essay on here.

Anyway, this is detracting from my opinion anyway, which I haven't yet expressed.

I believe that from my reading, three parties are having significant impacts on reliability in the system; the government, the current operator (Connex) and the Union.

One single party cannot be blamed for ALL the problems. Like any company, Connex has operational inefficiencies. The question to be asked is whether or not we think MTM can reduce these inefficiences (not get rid of them all together- inefficiencies will always exist). I don't really know whether or not MTM can do this but I'd be more inclined to let them have a go then to let Connex continue on.

As for the government: underinvestment in infrastructure, I don't think this needs to be explained.

The Union: Remember back, trains being cancelled for things like a rip in the drivers seat? - unions fault.

Thanks for that link. Is interesting. Last year especially I used to research quite a bit into Melbournes transport system. I'm gonna try find my posts on VN.

It may be, it may not be; it is rhetorical.

What? No it isn't. You asked the question to provoke a discussion, I thought/what do you think "rhetorical" means?

Also, hi VN. Long time since I've posted.
