Title: [UoM] 2013 Semester 1 Results Thread
Post by: Gloamglozer on June 28, 2013, 07:55:04 pm
NOTE:  When the subject result appears, it is not like the old portal where the subject disappears from the list.  This means you just have to keep religiously checking.

FNCE30007 - Derivative Securities Passed 2013, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1 Mark: 74 Grade:

Title: Re: [UoM] 2013 Semester 1 Results Thread
Post by: simpak on June 28, 2013, 08:24:39 pm
Yeah so for first years/anyone who doesn't know, here is how to check a result:
1. Go to the portal
2. DO NOT go to the 'recent results page', go directly to your study plan and scroll down to view your enrolments
3. When your subject result is available the subject on your study plan will appear in grey rather than black and it will say 'Passed' with your mark and grade at the end of the entry

If you do not see any subjects in grey...rinse and repeat!  Your result can come out literally at any time so there's nothing left to do but keep refreshing and biting your nails all day long :D

Is having a high GPA important for commerce students? Or should you just focus on the subjects that are important?

I saw it yesterday but only posted it today. Exam was in the 1st week.

It's important for getting your foot into a grad job, but you don't need 80+ scores unless you're aiming for investment banking, management consulting i.e. top tier positions. If you're just going for accounting grad job at Deliotte for example then from what I can gather a 70+ is sufficient. From there it's moreso about your personality, skills and experience. Grades are mainly used to cull ppl in the application process. But if you want to do research or honours then you'll need 80+ scores for sure.

tbh I'm more concerned about these semester 1 results than I was about year 12

If you studied like you did in year 12 I reckon you'll be fine!! I don't think I've ever worked as hard as I did in year 12 in uni LOL maybe doing a couple of all nighters but that doesn't really count, I haven't done intensive and consistent study since then.

did anyone else read this and was like "yup not me" ?
Yep always :'(

A bit annoying that subjects no longer disappear off the portal. I'm guessing there are going to be quite a few people that don't bother checking because they are used to that trick. For anyone who has received results, is there any sign at all that the result has come out? Does the section that says something like

BH-COM Bachelor of Commerce (Degree with Honours)
Course status:   Admitted
Total completed:   0.00 points
Fee type:   Commonwealth Supported Place

update the number of points completed when a result came out? I sorta liked the suspense of realising you had a result, then having to go and check it. You could prepare yourself.

When you look up your subject in the handbook it usually says somewhere round the top if it is.

Can someone check if the subject disappears from here under 'Check My Enrollment'?

Quick question; when did you guys do your actual exam? Was it week one?

I just want to estimate the time between actual completion of exam and publication of results. My 1st exam was on Friday of week 2, so I don't expect results until at least next week....but the suspense is killing me.

There is often little correlation between date of release and date of exam. I would expect most results to be out by Thursday/Friday.

Overall. If you want your exam there is a time frame where they allow you to inspect your exam (but you need to go there). You might want to contact your subject coordinator for that.

Students who are high achievers get their name placed on the Dean's List. The requirements to get on it may vary from faculty to faculty, and some faculties may not have a Dean's List.
Not sure how it works at UoM, but keep your scores up, and you'll get a certificate + ceremony at the start of next year for your outstanding performance :O Something for the resume, I guess

Perhaps, I know after the exam many people felt shattered; only about two seemed more confident than me. Plus I often wrote down a plan of how to calculate something before I did it because I knew I would make a mistake! bloody Curvature Tensors. Must be an IB graduate ;)

You guys taking math/physics majors really make me jealous, why can't I be a doctor and a mathematician?

I am IB graduate. How did you guess? It is in my sig or did something else tell you.

The last part sounds like what my girlfriend says to me :P

2013   Semester 1   MAST10008   Accelerated Mathematics 1   77   H2A   Second Class Hons
yay cramming 9 weeks of lectures saved me. Like 4 lectures a week is way too many. Went to tutes because I thought we had to until I realised in the last tute attendance wasn't even graded. :I

im pree sure if you do accelerated math 1 and decide not to do accelerated math 2, you can take calc2 and get the credits for calc 2 and linear algebra.

I'm not sure about this but isn't the hard part of accelerated maths over? Isn't AM 2 just calc 2 + some real analysis?
Title: Re: [UoM] 2013 Semester 1 Results Thread

AM2 is much harder. The lecturer isn't half as good (in my opinion) and the content itself is much harder to grasp. Students on average usually find it a fair bit more difficult.

When you say speed watch do you mean that you skip parts of the lecture or fast-forward it?
If it's the latter how do you do that?

With some lectures at Monash, there is the option to download the lecture as a video file. Open this up in VLC or other media player, and set the playback speed to 1.5-2x. I'd imagine its much the same with UoM lectures!

Yeah you can before you go into the actual player.  So in the list you click on the one you want, and it's kinda small text where it shows your selection on the right, and if I were a nice person I'd probably screen cap it and show you but I have to go out in a sec I'M SORRY.

2013   March    Science and Technology Education   74    H2B   Second Class Hons B

My first H2B in this course. Oh well. The result for MPE was withheld for six months for various reasons, so that's why it's listed as 2012.

Pretty happy with these results even though it's my worst semester to date.

Tell me. Is it really super possible to get 90 or above in linguistics based subjects?
I've only done one, and it seems as if it is extremely hard.

Edit:
Answer addressed here:
Spoiler
I have no idea either whether arts subjects are scaled or not although tutors have told us several times that scores of 90+ are extremely rare and are reserved for highly innovative, original and creative work (basically coming up with ideas that no one has ever thought of before). That might be different for different arts subjects but I'd say that it's true of the ones that I've taken.

Yes, I guess that's also the reason they have their exams scheduled first, so that there will be more time to grade, especially with say, 700+ students's worth of section D questions.

To be honest i've never actually understood how the marking of arts subjects works. I just know that it tends to be unfavorable.
Can anyone else shed some light on this?

I have no idea either whether arts subjects are scaled or not although tutors have told us several times that scores of 90+ are extremely rare and are reserved for highly innovative, original and creative work (basically coming up with ideas that no one has ever thought of before). That might be different for different arts subjects but I'd say that it's true of the ones that I've taken.

66 for Chem (wow, was expecting a 90 before the exam and still mid 70s after the exam, but then again I did miss a section worth ~15% of the subject cos it was 1/6th of the 80% exam so this could have been much more respectable)

and 77 for Russian 3 which landed me a study trip over there from September to April! So that's the saving grace I guess - this semester still went well all things considered!

Didn't work for me for second year chem :(
Great result though!

I really am beginning to question 80% exams, that was so bullshit. I could have gotten much higher and at least semi respectable if I didn't make a mistake worth 30 minutes of exam time. Sure, it's a big cop out, and you should lose a lot of marks for a one time mistake like that, but it shouldn't be the difference between a H1 and a H3. Somewhat annoyed at myself for being an idiot and forgetting to do a section, and also annoyed at the fact that 80% exams can do this to you in a subject.

I'm just really annoyed over the fact that:

1. I waited to freakin long to actually start studying for it (I guess having 3 exams late in the exam period really isn't a great timetable at all)
2. Performed well in the tests over the semester which doesn't seem to mean much at all
3. Understood the content during the semester (except for god damn inorganic) but did go and ask for help to the tutors if I needed to, and was up to date with the tutes
4. I got a goddamn 69, 1 more mark man!

Ugh, looking forward to my physics result now. For which I felt I went even worse in than chem.

I'm annoyed because I seriously don't think I lost enough marks to reduce to a 97 (I got 100 on the midsem and obviously 100 on all of those silly CALs) so everyone ignore me while I go sit in the corner and mope and I repeat again for the thousandth time my disclaimer: I do not apply my own ridiculous standards to any of you.

Also shocked at the following:

CHEM10003 - Chemistry 1

This is despite botching half my pracs and coming out of the exam *knowing* I'd made a couple of mistakes. So very, very happy with myself right now, I realistically couldn't have asked for a much higher score with the errors I'd made.

This years 1st years are crazy, absolutely insane. I think the 2nd year cohort is nowhere near as strong, at least the section that uses AN. And then everyone 3rd year and above that still uses are all geniuses.

As to whether it's normal to get all H1s... all you can say is that it is uncommon and rare, and that all of the students here are obviously of high calibre. It's like a nexus of high achievers here.

MAST10005 - Calculus 1
Passed
2013, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 63 Grade: Pass (P)

Considering how very hard I worked all semester, only to go into an 80%-weighted exam and flip my shit at its disproportionate difficulty, I'm really disappointed with myself for getting such a low mark. BUT, coming out of the exam and knowing how majorly I'd screwed up, this subject went better than expected. I really do feel like 80% is too much for a single timed assessment >_> It certainly made it impossible for me to redeem myself, even though I'd thoroughly revised everything on the course beforehand. Now to use this result as motivation and never score this low again :B
(I can totally still get an 87 average if I get a 90 in everything next semester, I WILL MAKE THIS HAPPEN)

the amount of people getting 90s and even 100s in like a cohort is probable at most 5? i think these people like to come to this forum alot.
OR there are obviously some trollers here. getting a 100 is insane, i would like to see how the lecturer reacts when he sees someone getting this mark. And to the people getting 90s and 100s, im going to pay attention to the names on the dean's list to see who you are.
But im not ruling out the probability that there are geniuses in melb uni, chance is its not high that they frequent this forum alot like these trolls do.

Honestly, I don't see the point of lying on an internet forum. I know that the people here achieved the marks they've said and if they didn't, they are just lying to themselves.

On a side note are subjects that are worth more credit points weighted more? I.e. if one subject is worth like 25 points (say H3) and another is worth 12.5 (like H1) is that equal to two H3s and one H1?

physics in vce was really dry and I've heard it doesn't get any better at uni  :( you either understand stats or you don't. If you go to all the lectures and go through the entire reader then you'll be fine!

Which subject is worse: Stats or Physics for Biomed? Totally looking forward to next semester.

I did Physics 2: Life Sciences, which is apparently not as bad as Physics for Biomedicine. The step up from no physics to the subjects in Uni is a lot worse than having done VCE (as long as you get 30 or above) physics and moving to Physics 2. Same with bio, same with chemistry.

Statistics is harder to conceptualise I would say and make sense of what is actually going on, what to use when, and also having to know how to use the computer programs. The subject made me feel so insignificant, I had no idea what was going on for the whole semester. But it is easier to score well on because of the scaling. If you're good with the distributions we covered in methods, you'd be alright here. But if not, you need to work for it. I've attached two pages of the exam summary sheet below - if you want the whole thing just go through some past papers. It's either you get it or you don't.

More off topic:
Spoiler
We had Davide Ferrari for statistics, he was a very funny guy (who would talk about his travels from Italy and how people in airports would stop him to ask whether he had a Ferrari). Again, one of those lecturers who was very transparent and would update students on a regular basis.

Physics is something that people often complain as being dry, and often coupled with teaching mechanisms etc. which are... let's say not to everyone's tastes. It is truly a subject that has a bad reputation at least at UoM for first years. I was fortunate not to have endured such negativity, Michelle Livett happened to be a great lecturer which explained everything to us from many viewpoints and did so slowly, and was very transparent in the assessment tasks etc, so we were completely prepared for the subject. I don't think this is necessarily an entirely truthful statement for the other subjects. I am choosing to tread carefully, but my opinions have been voiced already through the statements of some of the others on here. The testing is not based on your ability for fine tune details, but it is for the concepts. According to the lecturer, the exam is not going to be a plug and chug exercise, half is showing you know what you are doing with the equations/concepts, etc. and the other half is doing it.

More off topic:
Spoiler
Apparently there are also some tutors that deliberately take off marks for no reason other than that they want to be trolls to students in biomedicine because they want them to face the real world, and that many of the students haven't really lost that many marks before in their schooling career. I overheard a tutor saying this once. I'll at least clear the tutors Millie and Steven Luntz from this, they were legitimate.

But to the other potential trolls I say this is utterly unprofessional and full of crap, which acts to further perpetuate the negativity of first year physics at UoM.

Back to the point, physics is harder to score well in. You will get questions where you have never seen them before. Hence you need to be flexible; you are almost guaranteed to be trolled with something you have no idea what to do at many stages. With statistics, it's more if you understand it, you will know what to do most of the time.

Which one was worse?
Physics. Yes. Even though I did Life Sciences.

UNIB10002   Logic: Language and Information   69   H3   Third Class Honours

Ladies and gentlemen, never EVER do Logic. Every homework assignment (there are four) is in pairs, two big group assignments and I swear some of the stuff we did was as challenging as AM1. Not to mention, who in their right mind assigns 20% of the exam to questions even harder than the already difficult course material, 'for students aiming for a H1'? I am legitimately curious as to how many students score a H1 for Logic each year, because it seems that it's a LOT more work than anyone doing a PURELY BREADTH subject should be doing. Sticking to something more forgiving and actually enjoyable next time. /endrant

oh wow. wooooooooooooooooow.

FINA10036 - The Body: Facts and Fictions
Passed
2013, Semester 1, Southbank, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 82 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

guys. if you want an easy breadth ^^^^^ SRSLY. i would have been happy with just a P considering how much work i did for the subject (aka none at all)
i'm so shocked the scores even came out today though. XD was expecting it to come out on the 12th.

so there we go. three H1s and a 79. OTL
It never ceases to amaze me what people come up with to do as breadth haha. I almost feel like I'm wasting mine by doing 'serious' subjects like economics and chemistry. Dare I indulge in Glee Singing?

This is my actual mark.

LING20011 - Grammar of English
Passed
2013, Semester 1, Parkville, On Campus, Semester 1
Mark: 97 Grade: First Class Honours (H1)

Best. Semester. Ever. :D

ahaha it wasn't actually me going "oh i'm gonna take this subject because it sounds easy" though
i actually *do* love to draw;;; that three hour workshop every week was pretty much just a block where i got to relax/do something i enjoyed. :) which makes getting a respectable mark even nicer, because i would have taken it regardless of what i thought i'd score. (and i actually expected to do awfully, the guy who ran my workshops/marked my folio was really into like, hipster, picassoeque work and always told me that the way i draw was too "old fashioned/classical/not expressive" and if he wanted an accurate depiction of the model, he'd just take a photo. OTL also my essay was the HUGEST load of crap ever)

($700 for however many workshops we had is the most expensive lifedrawing class ever though)

I really enjoy drawing too!! Too bad that subject isn't offered in sem 2 :( and jap 1 isnt either :( ughhh so annoying how not all subjects are offered during both semesters. Is Nature Morte: 21st Century Perspective similar?

It's not that weird like they would have just pressed 8 instead of 9 when they were entering it in!
Yay well done stonecold ;)

Thanks :)

I didn't even complain or anything!
The lecturer screwed up everyones' marks!
He sent an email out in the afternoon grovelling for forgiveness...
I think he forgot to include the tutorial marks somehow.

But yeah, apparently we are all getting an official apology from the arts faculty soon.
This should be fun haha!

well the subject matter will be different of course, but i doubt the content itself will be too different. i was planning on taking that one in sem2 2014. no breadth next semester. :C
theres an animation breadth which is meant to be pretty fun also.

And I got 66 in Chemistry (already ranted about it) and 77 in Russian and Physiology.

Does it really matter if you score higher or lower in the percentage barrack?. So for example if you get 90 or 95 and or 82 or 89. Or is more important just to get a HD or H1 regardless if 80 or 90%?
Title: Re: [UoM] 2013 Semester 1 Results Thread

It can never hurt to get a higher H1 C:
I think for most people it's more of a personal achievement thing, but there are awards and research assistance offers and other placings and etc. that are very competitive and so getting better H1 grades is certainly useful for those.
If all your classes are 80 and all your classes are 100, though, and you're aiming for postgrad med/law, your GPA remains the same, to my understanding.
I'm probably wrong about all that, though, but I'm sure someone more experienced can answer your question :V

I know post-grad vet at Melb uses your number grade rather than H1 etc, as entry is based primarily on grades and not on an interview/other testing like med.

I think multiple reviews on the same unit would be a positive though wouldn't it? You get more than one perspective and it will show up any personal bias if present.

Speaking from my own experiences as a former BA student, Arts breadths are not the best choice if you're looking for a WAM boost.

In most Arts subjects, you need to write at or above the level expected of a PhD student if you want any hope of scoring 100. That means your essays must demonstrate independent and creative thought, rather than simply agree with the literature. Even if you show some capacity for creative thinking, that should be enough to get you to 85-90 - assuming that your clarity of expression and referencing are flawless, that is.

Very frustrating but that is how it is at nearly all universities.

Well, I'd say people tend to stick in their own areas, so probably not?  Like, depending on what you apply for.
Alternatively, I have friends who get ~90 on their Arts assessments, you just have to get good at writing for university.

Probably gonna piss some people off, but I reckon that a 95 in a humanities subject outweighs a 95 in an engineering subject because of the subjectivity of the marking scheme.

Obviously, speaking from a wide background haha, it is easier to get very, very high marks in Science subjects than it is in Arts subjects.  But I don't think it's easier to get a H1.  Just more likely that you would get more low H1s in Arts putting in the same amount of work to get a high H1 in Science.

EVERYONE I KNOW (INCLUDING MYSELF) DID BADLY IN CALCULUS 1 TONYCHET IT'S NOT A BAD SCORE
Seriously, I wonder why they didn't scale marks up at all given the enormous number of P and F-boundary students.
It seems a bit mean to blame the students when the exam was so awfully cruel in comparison to all the set questions/lecture note examples/everything we were provided with. :')

If its any consolation it was exactly the same situation last year.

Yeah, I was really perplexed when I first saw this. I was freaking out and I called the student centre and they confirmed that it should be indeed be a H1 and that it would be rectified. I should probably follow this up.
