Congratulations to all of you who got in!!!

I'm a year 10 jmss student and hopefully you jmss newbies aren't too bad haha
Not to demotivate any of you, but be prepared for some sleepless nights, stressful sacs and working your ass off.
When you first come to jmss you might feel a bit discouraged by your results but remember that getting a 70% on a JMSS test is equivalent to getting 90% on a Nossal test.

If you are planning to write the methods readiness test, really don't stress out because it's really just index laws, algebra, quadratics and polynomials.
I'm a year 10 methods student and I strongly advise that if you have not already completed the year 10 textbook at school, don't take the test because you will actually die from the fast paced workload and sacs next year also year 10 maths tuition is VERY different to doing it at school.

For those who unfortunately missed out, if your planning to get a good ATAR it really does not matter what school you go to, it's about putting hard work in. So please do not get discouraged and remember that there's always year 11 entry and another year 11 exam for the Elizabeth Sciences School!

Hey guys, a thing that u might complete in JMSS is a climate data science so basically how would u visualise climate change to an audience to make it compelling. What would be your ideas?

oh gosh, that sounds terrifying. does anyone get higher than 90% on their tests?

I got bad group for my group activities, no one was smart in my group.

I don't think you should blame your result on your group. Your mark for the group activities doesn't depend on the intelligence of the group members, it depends on how you interact with them.

Thank you so much for this information. Is there a maximum (cap rule) of method students?

What subject is this a part of? It seems like an interesting individual and group project.
When faced with a problem, you either find a way or an excuse.

Yeah there are 8 classes in the y10 cohort. 2 of which are methods classes so 50 students cap

Yes, quite a lot of people do. From experience I averaged 90 (in total) throughout the year (so far). Not rare to get 90+ in one assignment but only around 5% of students (10ish) average 90+ which allow them to do 2 VCE 3/4''s in year 11.

Yes, Emerging Technologies (a core subject unless you do Japanese of French).

I've considered doing Japanese SL, but I really love technology as well D:
Could you tell me what topics and projects you cover in ET?
(It's so sad when you have too many interests and you can't choose all ;-;)

It's really dependent on which class you're in (not sure why but different classes learn different things).

Our class did the following:
- Learnt how to use the coding language Python
- Computer Science Stuff?
- Data Science: Analysed data using python code and created visualisations on it (either it be graphs, animations or other means)
- Simulations: Looking at the parameters that affecting different type of simulations and creating them in Python (bacterial growth and stuff, we played Plague Inc. in class to investigate this more)
- Creating animations/simulations in Python (like bouncing balls or Newton's Cradle etc etc)
- Basic things on variables and ethics

Some other classes did:
- Algorithmic Thinking: Had a booklet that had questions based on algorithmic thinking (kinda like puzzles and instruction based questions)
- Python Visualisation: Created fancy Python related animations and visualisations
- Climate Change Visualisations

Overall the class is quite programming intensive but you'll receive a lot of help and will be taught on using the language.

There was also some other stuff that was covered by the other classes (and mine) but I don't quite remember. I'm willing to answer some of the questions you guys have for what to expect at JMSS in year 10.

If you don't do methods, is the regular year 10 maths course the same as methods or is it a bit more difficult? thank you :))

It's just year 10 maths, it is slightly bit harder than a standard maths course (assessment wise) but the content covered is what you would normally expect.
- Linear Equations
- Algeba
- Exponential and Logarithmic
- Quadratics
- Geometry
- Measurement
- Parabolas
- Trigonometry

Also note, that we do not use handheld CAS' anymore and use Mathematica. It's pretty much a computer software you can download on your laptop which does calculations for you (as long as you learn the syntax behind it).

Man, the 50 student cap for methods scares me ahah
Do you know the approximate number of people that took the methods test? (for your year)

And also, is the test made so that you can't finish it in time? Or is it a medium-length test that is doable under timed conditions?

Little lower than half the grade take it (approximately 80, give or take 20). The test is quite simple if you've done year 10 maths, you'll finish within expected time and should have time to look over your answers.

The large majority of the test is quadratic based questions.

Is it true that next year there's no CAS and students are meant to use mathematica?

Yes it is true unless they abandon the program
