my picks are the usual select entry schools, plus I've heard private schools such as st kevins, ruyton, and scotch have very strong cohorts this year, what do you all think?
-
definitely macrob and mhs
but mostly macrob :)
-
CAE FTW :P
-

this will prob sound really stupid but ........ whats cohorts got to do with and how will it affect ones atar? .. somebody please fill me in
-
The same ones that always do well haha.
Highly doubt any school is just gonna jump 50 or so rankings in a year :P
-
GLEN WAVERLEY SECONDARY COLLEGE!
we got like 22 over 99.00 last year ;D
nah but in all honesty, we have a nice cohort this year ;D
*correction - thanks vea
-
I've heard that this cohort is strong in general, irrespective of school. I know it's not much to go by, but our naplan results are significantly higher than any other year
-
i think rowville will do a lot better than in previous years, with a much higher mean
im guessing there will be at least 4 people with 97+
-
22* ;D
But this is still very insignificant compared to all those private schools/selective entry schools.
yeah, but we're probably the best non-select, non-private school in terms of marks though :\
22 is still a heck of a lot of people :S
sad how we didn't get any 99.95's
but this year, oh come on we have to get at least one 99.95!! - it's been since 2006 :(
we entered the school gifting its year 12's will four 99.95s, and we shall exit the school gifting it with many more 99.95s :D
-
Oi can you guys stop talking about yourselves and stick to the topic 8)
-
I know it's not much to go by, but our naplan results are significantly higher than any other year
lol naplan...
Anyways there's a new school that's going to be on the list of schools this year and it's my old school Simonds Catholic College! They use to only have students from Year 7-Year 10 but they extended it to Year 12s 2 years ago so this year it will be the first time they'll enter the list of schools LOL!
But yeh I'm pretty sure this year's MHS cohort might be stronger than last years but I also know of many strong students from other schools as well. The competition is just too much to bear! :( BUT I'M LOVING IT!!! :P
-
(let interpret this a different way - i.e. do well = most improved) I'd rather look at the schools that have improved most in the last year (particularly in the western suburbs) instead of the predictable results of melb high and macrob. Just to see who has jumped up the most.
-
Off topic, but b^3, i realised from your sig that you're the 2011 Dux, I thought Dux was given to the person with the highest ATAR? :S
-
Off topic, but b^3, i realised from your sig that you're the 2011 Dux, I thought Dux was given to the person with the highest ATAR? :S
I think after we get our ATAR, we'll be in summer holiday. Who the **** goes to school during summer holiday o.O?
PS: Our awards was yesterday
PS 2: Paulsterio's below post just answered my question :)
-
Off topic, but b^3, i realised from your sig that you're the 2011 Dux, I thought Dux was given to the person with the highest ATAR? :S
(dux at our school) Our school does it differenlty, we had our awards night on wednesday and the dux is given to who the teachers think will go on to get the highest ATAR and do the best. I didn't think I was in the running and was sure I knew who should have got it, in the end they couldn't split 3 of us (scores too close = sac scores + comps e.t.c). But keep in mind that our school gets around 10 (or so) and we are ranked around the 300make that 400 mark (just checked it), so it is not as comparable to say the dux at melb high or macrob. But it does look good on a resume.

Oh, it's cause at my school they announce the Dux after the ATARs are released, whoever gets the highest ATAR will be the Dux so I was just a little confused ;D
Yepp, I get you I get you :) - anyways, congratulations and I hope that you do end up getting the highest ATAR, all the best :)

Thanks, but I don't think I will though, my english score isn't going to be high enough.
Anyway back on topic. Srsly though our school is starting to get a bit more competitive culture than it has had in past years and I think we are going to jump a load of ranks this year. C'mon western suburbeners (not a word, I know), we can show everyone what we've got.

I used to live in the Western Suburbs back in Primary School and I remember back then there were loads of smart kids that I knew, recently I've got in contact with them again on Facebook and that and it seems as if a lot of them haven't realised their potential - had they gone to a school such as Glen Waverley Secondary, I think they would have ended up much better - so I do feel sympathy for them :(
But yeah, that competitive culture is important, and I think that's what a lot of lower-ranked schools lack, just a lot of their population isn't very interested in academics
Btw, if you're living in the Western Suburbs, you're going to love travelling to Monash every day next year ;P
-
I approve of very little of this behaviour
Except Kreo, I approve of him.
Please stay on topic. saying 'off topic, but...' doesn't cut it
-
Hope Scotch does well this year, I think we have a very strong cohort :D
-
I predict Melbourne Grammar as pulling a 2009 - a high number of 99.95s, and a median ATAR around 93-94. You heard it here first, and I'm generally pretty good at this :p
-
Goddamit. Scotch for median ATAR 93-94 this year!
-
Damn all of you with your high medians and number of 99.95's, urgh :P
-
Lol, a single 99 at my school would be considered our best year
-
MELBOURNE HIGH!
-
Btw, if you're living in the Western Suburbs, you're going to love travelling to Monash every day next year ;P
Least we're closer to Melbourne!
And I think MHS will beat Macrob this year :P
-

Cause you're in it Thushan!
You guys know what, we should like create a super-elite school, where at the end of year 10, we take in just 50 of the best in the state, and ensure that they all get above 99.50, good idea eh? ;D
-
Wantirna is going to kick everyone's ass this year so look out!
not really, we're going to fail
-

A single 90+ is considered good at my school!

I hear CGS have their own 'thushan' this year. I'd say CGS is the dark horse in the likes of MHS/Mac.Rob/MGS/Scotch.

I don't understand Paul.
Are you somehow insinuating nacho is a) not a female and b) doesn't attend MacRob? Because that is just absurd and if you were, I'd have to ask you to apologize.

He didn't just get a 50. He got a premier's. Just saying. :P

My school would still be in celebrations if someone got 80+.
-
He didn't just get a 50. He got a premier's. Just saying. :P
What exactly is a premier's award? top 5 students in that subject? :S
-
Sometimes 5, sometimes more sometimes less it seems. Or maybe not everyone shows up.

Yep. So he beat 15 995 kids if we take the nice number of 16 000 do Psych.
-
I've heard that this cohort is strong in general, irrespective of school. I know it's not much to go by, but our naplan results are significantly higher than any other year
I didn't take the naplan seriously because I knew it wasn't going to go on my report, so I purposely answered every question wrong :P
I think Melbourne High School will be 1st and Melbourne Girls Grammar School will be 2nd. Just my two cents.
-

Feel free to count up how many there are :P
-
Wow so JW got premiers for psych !
So many ppl from vcenotes on that list haha even that taqi guy
-
My school (PLC) has a ridiculous number of 99.95 contenders this year - just judging off year 11 3/4 results, we're going to trump the 2010 cohort (most of the smart kids did IB before, now more do VCE) - out of the ~15 kids who did Methods 3/4 in year 11 last year, ~10 got 45+. Last year, all 3 academic awards for Methods (based off SAC rank) were given to year 11s; this year 4 were given to year 12s (meaning they pwned the year 11s). Plus,
I think about 4 three kids already have premier's awards under their belts, at least 6 already have a 50, and there are a few who have multiple 48/49-ish scores from year 11.
-
Other projection: this year's high 99s cut-offs in particular are going to be absurdly high. I'm thinking it might even go back into the 210+ range - there's an absurd number of intelligent kids at the usual "hotspot" schools (Scotch/MGS/CGS/MGGS/PLC) who have one or two 50s (or close to 50s) under their belts already, who also do (and are very good at) a number of language subjects/Spesh. Interestingly enough, I haven't heard much about MacRob's cohort this year (other than Menang being awesome), although the MHS kids are quite strong (although lack of languages sometimes keeps them from the 99.95s).
I need to get a life.
-
i don't think the cutoffs will change heaps, because of the relative nature of all the scores. as in, there may be heaps of intelligent english students but the same number will still get the 50's 49's etc. Although there will be a surge in the cutoffs, i don't htink itll be huge.

Nice! Now to brag about Scotch :D
Hmm, our year 11s had about 8 fifties in total last year (including 4 for methods, all in my class! :D), including four premiers' awards. The median for methods in my class (which was basically all year 11) was 46, and we had about 30 year 11s do methods 3/4. And there's been talk going round (between ex-Scotchies) that my year level is apparently the strongest for a while - hopefully we do well!
Ok, enough bragging about Scotch.
Hope all our schools do well!!!
EDIT: 1111 posts. Oh yeah!
-
You guys are so lucky (why couldn't my school be like this, I'd sure be more motivated to study right now, not that I haven't worked hard all year), make sure you make use of what you've got.
Also nice post count Thushan.

Whoo I get a mention! :D
Just to get MacRob on the board:
12x Year 11 50's last year, with at least 4 Year 11 Premier's Awards that I know of.
I forget how many 40+'s there were in Year 11, but it was probably every 8 in 10 girls. Jussayin'.
-
Skyrim comes out.
At least that is after all the Maths exams (don't know when specialist is)
Many people could be ruined beforehand by Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3
-
LOL! is it just me or do the non-private, non-select entry schools just don't get any mention?! :O
Well, Glen Waverley Secondary College last year had numerous 45+'s including in Methods (Luffy come to mind), Accounting (Tarun and others come to mind), Software Development (hmm, I wonder who ;)) and Biology yeaaaaaaahh ;)
We're so gonna cream all the other non-private, non-select entry schools
hmph. :)

Nothing to do with study scores, more to do with subject combinations. I figured last year the cutoffs would be lower for 99.95 because not as many people were spamming high scaling LOTEs in tandem with 50s in English and Spesh - it's quite the opposite this year, from what I gather. That, and there's a ridiculous number of high achieving kids doing two languages including/or Latin.
-
Well my school got 2x 45+, in BM and Further...
cheeeyyaaahhh, gonna take you all done
-
*down

*down
Ok, perhaps the english skills aren't gonna be what wins it for me.
-
Guys, it might be a good idea to refrain from mentioning specific people in this thread - it's a really stressful time of year for year 12 students, and I know that when I was going through I hated the expectations that others had for me... try not to put pressure on people (:
-
Well lets see.
In my school, the highest SS that a current year 12 got as a year 11 student is 46. Damn you private schools and selective schools :(

There is. Ironically, it's someone named Respect.

my school only has 80 girls in year 12, and already has 5x50s from last year, so hopefully we are right up there this year ;)
everyone thought it was a surprise when we finished 2nd to Melbourne High a few years ago, hopefully it happens again!
-
Watch Camberwell Grammar - always reasonably strong, with 1-2 99.95s on average. But this year, the cohort is ridiculously talented - based on midyear results, and also the 3/4s taken in year 11 last year, it'll be a big result. Eleven 50s alone last year from year 11s!

Now everybody, quieten down. I might not go to as fancy a school as you rich private school boys, but let me tell you that you're all coming off as elitist. You should learn from schools such as MGS who aren't touting the prowess of their cohort even though they have the legendary Romperait.
I repeat: QUIETEN DOWN.
