just curious to see how much a standard 4 subjects a semester 8 a year timetable looks, also tell me what course & majors youre doing cos im sure its different amongst the different degrees

B.comm - accounting/econ major (with a view into econ honours)
Generally I just read the prescribed texts, do the homework set out and ask my mates about any concepts i'm not too sure about. The real trick into maintaining your gpa is to focus all your time and attention on the assignments - plenty of kids just breeze through the assignments quickly and at the last minute thinking its only worth a few percents. However, those little extra marks saved my ass countless times when i fucked up the exam (just last sem - i headed into micro 2 with a 96 average); came out 2 hours later thinking "I'm screwed" - sure enough, only recieved a 80 for my final grade (which meant i only got 70 or the exam)) - those assignment marks saved my ass big time).
WAM's hovering around 86 atm (which won't be the case once I complete macro 2 and econometrics this sem -.-").
-
Pure 'hours worked' isn't the best metric because sometimes I get nothing done in 2 hours if I'm studying something I don't like but since you asked;
23 contact hours a week and probably something like 15 hours of study on top of that? Which works out to a pretty standard full time week (38 hrs).
It changes though, start of semester is a lot less, exam period is a lot more.
-
I know for monash science, most subjects have 6 contact hours (labs and lectures) and an additional 6 recommended hours of private study. So, 24 total hours a week according to their guidelines or about 3 and a bit hours a day.
Honestly though, i reckon almost no one follows those guidelines. In uni, half the battle is actually showing up to your classes and doing assignments on time. This might sound like a bit of the joke if you've only experienced the VCE enviroment but its true.

Why are you already concerned about Uni GPA? you're in year 10...

People are getting more and more competitive, this scares me.

There was a 14 year old on the med-entry (umat practice company) discussions boards.

Ooh, kids these days! When I was in Year 10, I was stuffing my face full of anime and blissfully unaware of any "Maths Methods" or "Specialist Maths"; it was just "Year 11 Maths" and "Year 12 Maths"! And what the hell was "UMAT", anyway? What, you have to do an interview to get into Med? GAAAAAH!
I miss being young, sometimes.
Seriously, though, people really are getting more competitive. I was at the top of my Year 8 class, but I'd probably be fifth or lower had I been in my younger brother's Year 8 class (this year).

lmao i get bored, and my older bro is in uni and he does like no studying so i was just curious to see how much everyone else does LOL
id rather lurk around a forum and maybe learn a thing or two useful than scroll through my facebook newsfeed
and if i have a question why not ask :P LOL these forums are here for a reason lmaooo
everyone on heres so smart and successful -.- strongmotivation/10

My friend is doing 4 subjects this semester. Each of her subjects has one lecture and one tutorial. She doesn't need to attend her lectures. Her tutorial attendance is generally worth 10-15% of her unit mark.
She doesn't attend uni at all. She can still get HDs.
Contact hours? 0 Hours.
Course? Arts. (Nothing against Arts - not saying this to bag Arts students but just as a point of comparison).
For me, I have around 12 hours of lectures and 11 hours of tutorials/pracs + CBL per week, but I need to attend 80% of my pracs/tutes. So I have to go to them. I don't usually go to lectures - just do the reading or watch them online. So personally I have around 11 contact hours.
-
Perhaps another good observation in addition to how many class hours and studying is... how much sleep do you need to maintain your GPA.
-
WAM is 95 (it's 94.5 but we will pretend) and I study eight to nine hours per day most days outside of class. My course is Science, I do not have a major yet but all my classes are Biological Science.
Competitive lyf brah.
Will be interested to see work comparison this semester at Penn.

Oh wow! Congrats! BTW what degree are you doing at Penn?
-
far out congrats man getting into penn!
-
Omg u guyyyys there are no degrees, I'm enrolled in The College of Arts and Sciences and the US government has decided my concentration of study is Biology so half of my courseload has to have a BIOL code at the start. So yeah I'm doing genetics, physiology, embryology and criminology breadth.
Thank you :)

What!?! you really study 8-9 hours on most days!?? :S
I do that over a month and i'm in the same course as u lol :/

Ooh, you looking at a semerster at UPenn? Really looking at spending a semester there too. What were the pre-reqs for application? Asides from the ridiculously high WAM requirement? (Ughhh 85)
-
Mines 1-2 hours per week from week 1-12 aside assignments/reports. I do go to lectures though and have 30 contact hours (Had 33 last semester)
Then 121 hours during 5 days of swotvac. Having a low HD WAM atm. Expecting it to drop this semester for being a total fail in maths and physics atm...
-
Average mark is 94.5 ATM. Do around about 3-4 hours a day, on top of tutoring as a job and orchestra/production volunteering. If you keep up with the lectures and do the required work, you should be fine.

1. You're in first year.
2. I don't take breadth.
3. It depends on how intent you are on getting +90 in everything
4. I enjoy studying!
But yes it is truth.

Pretty much just the high average, when I applied mine was 92. I'm pretty sure for last semester the CAS requirement dropped to 80 but I could be wrong - I think it is always higher for Sem 1 exchange than Sem 2 exchange. You just have to go through their whole silly application process after UoM nominates you but you're pretty much guaranteed your spot from there on in. When are you thinking of going?

Which uni is she at and what are her courses? At ANU they barely ever hand out marks over 85, even to top students; if you don't do work and don't go to class, you're fucked.

Currently sitting on a of GPA 3.958 and WAM of 96.658. I do nothing but eat, sleep and study, so I guess around 9-10 hours per day (and I normally sleep 10-11 hours per day, sleep is essential). Although the reason I spend so much time studying is because I don't attend lectures and so on, self studying suits me better. If I were to go to lectures, my average study time per day would decrease dramatically.
Course: Bcom/Bsc
Majors: Finance, Actuarial Studies, Econometrics and business statistics, Pure Mathematics

So far 3 H1s and a H2B for a stupid breadth

Most likely sem 1 next yr if i can scrape 1 hd from either macro 2 or econometrics (looking at the wharton bus. School - which is apparently highly selective in students they choose for exchange). -sigh-
-
Oh yeah for Wharton it's recommended you only try if you have an average over 90, or so they told us at our info session last semester. I'm fairly sure they're only taking one student this year, but you can take Wharton classes even if you're a CAS student. Not that it's very helpful to you, considering you are a commerce student so you'd have to take your whole load in Wharton.
Good luck!
-
Sorry but what does WAM stand for??
-
Crap, no way i can bump my average up to 90 in one semster. Oh well, guess it's back to the drawing board.
-
Sorry but what does WAM stand for??
ill have a wild guess and say weighted average mark

Do you take advantage of the libraries?

Yup Weighted Average Mark, some higher level units may get more weighting on their marks, hence the name

why arent you at harvard? LOL
-
I know i'm only a silly first-poster, but to all of those with really high averages you should consider volunteering some of your time. I mean, the self-pride you lose from letting your average slip from 95 to 85 will be more than made up for in the feeling you get from helping those less fortunate.
And you will still get into any postgrad course you want.
I recently begun volunteering as a homework helper for disadvantaged and refugee students in one of the poorest suburbs, and no 95 WAM could replace this!

Just curious what unit was the one that killed ur GPA? Physics??

yeah.... fucking physics grrr

Deakin :P (I think that says something about the quality of the university). But yeah - she got two Ds and two HDs last semester, but I did exaggerate it when I said she doesn't go to uni at all - but it's like 4 hours per week - cause she only went to 2 of her 2 hour tutes per week, something like that.
