B.comm - accounting/econ major (with a view into econ honours)

Generally I just read the prescribed texts, do the homework set out and ask my mates about any concepts i'm not too sure about. The real trick into maintaining your gpa is to focus all your time and attention on the assignments - plenty of kids just breeze through the assignments quickly and at the last minute thinking its only worth a few percents. However, those little extra marks saved my ass countless times when i fucked up the exam (just last sem - i headed into micro 2 with a 96 average); came out 2 hours later thinking "I'm screwed" - sure enough, only recieved a 80 for my final grade (which meant i only got 70 or the exam)) - those assignment marks saved my ass big time).

WAM's hovering around 86 atm (which won't be the case once I complete macro 2 and econometrics this sem -.-").

Pure 'hours worked' isn't the best metric because sometimes I get nothing done in 2 hours if I'm studying something I don't like but since you asked;

23 contact hours a week and probably something like 15 hours of study on top of that? Which works out to a pretty standard full time week (38 hrs).
It changes though, start of semester is a lot less, exam period is a lot more.

I know for monash science, most subjects have 6 contact hours (labs and lectures) and an additional 6 recommended hours of private study.  So, 24 total hours a week according to their guidelines or about 3 and a bit hours a day.

Honestly though, i reckon almost no one follows those guidelines. In uni, half the battle is actually showing up to your classes and doing assignments on time. This might sound like a bit of the joke if you've only experienced the VCE enviroment but its true.

People are getting more and more competitive, this scares me.

Ooh, kids these days! When I was in Year 10, I was stuffing my face full of anime and blissfully unaware of any "Maths Methods" or "Specialist Maths"; it was just "Year 11 Maths" and "Year 12 Maths"! And what the hell was "UMAT", anyway? What, you have to do an interview to get into Med? GAAAAAH!

I miss being young, sometimes.

Seriously, though, people really are getting more competitive. I was at the top of my Year 8 class, but I'd probably be fifth or lower had I been in my younger brother's Year 8 class (this year).
I always look a little lost.

My friend is doing 4 subjects this semester. Each of her subjects has one lecture and one tutorial. She doesn't need to attend her lectures. Her tutorial attendance is generally worth 10-15% of her unit mark.

She doesn't attend uni at all. She can still get HDs.

Contact hours? 0 Hours.

Course? Arts. (Nothing against Arts - not saying this to bag Arts students but just as a point of comparison).

For me, I have around 12 hours of lectures and 11 hours of tutorials/pracs + CBL per week, but I need to attend 80% of my pracs/tutes. So I have to go to them. I don't usually go to lectures - just do the reading or watch them online. So personally I have around 11 contact hours.

Perhaps another good observation in addition to how many class hours and studying is...  how much sleep do you need to maintain your GPA.

WAM is 95 (it's 94.5 but we will pretend) and I study eight to nine hours per day most days outside of class. My course is Science, I do not have a major yet but all my classes are Biological Science.

Competitive lyf brah.

Will be interested to see work comparison this semester at Penn.

Omg u guyyyys there are no degrees, I'm enrolled in The College of Arts and Sciences and the US government has decided my concentration of study is Biology so half of my courseload has to have a BIOL code at the start.  So yeah I'm doing genetics, physiology, embryology and criminology breadth.

Thank you :)
