Title: Class of 2012: ATAR and Study Scores Discussion Thread
Post by: ninwa on December 13, 2012, 09:53:49 pm
Firstly, please read this thread.

This is the place to discuss how you went, congratulate other people on their results, and generally talk about the release of ATARs and/or individual scores.

I cannot believe I got a 50 for Further. I cannot thank this forum enough for the amazing support I've received throughout the year. I know I've been an absolute pain in the arse at times, and I will probably continue to be for the next 12 months, but there is no way I could've done this without you all. I cannot express my gratitude in words.

THANK YOU ATARNOTES! <3

I finish one essay and leave two unfinished in the exam due to me being in some type of panicky frozen state and I manage a 37...I'll take it hahaha.

Will Melbourne Uni call about Chancellor's Scholars?

Should we accept all scholarship offers or something? I really have no idea.

But do you go to the uni? Or not?

Going uni can't hurt. You get an opportunity to talk to student advisors (eg. me) who can give you an idea of how the course is from a student's perspective.

I know! I mean, a 50 in Further is quite attainable for a lot of people, but to get a 49 in Literature in Year 11... she must have stomped on the competition! xD

Shouldn't be happy about that, in fact you should be ashamed. If you actually studied for it you could have gotten an A+. Apply yourself.

Oi, step off dude. You have no right telling people that they should be ashamed. There a line between constructive criticism and outright bigotry . Be considerate farkk.

dont let one study score change your mind about a career - you'll do a lot better in uni if you're passionate about what you're doing

Nisha, I want to meet you.

I'm currently doing Chemistry at UoM.

I got a 48 SS in English. I got a 36 SS in Chem. I did at least 200hrs of Chem study throughout the year (that's a lot - around an hour a day for every day of the school term including exams and breaks, averaged out). I did 40 practice exams at 1.5hrs each (70hrs) for the midyears, and significantly less for end of years due to more subjects, but still a hell of a lot of practice exams.

I was distraught with my Chemistry score because it was the subject that I enjoyed most. And I was shocked at what I got for English - I didn't envision a single mark above a 40.

Don't rethink what you want to do.

At university, I scored a H1 (first class honours) in Chemistry 1 at Melbourne Uni, and I got a H2A (one mark off a first class honours) for second semester Chemistry. It's by far a strong subject. Trust me - stuff you are passionate about goes a long way; you'd be very surprised at how much better you do in university with a little motivation. PM me if you want to even discuss this further, I'm suddenly inexplicably very passionate about making sure you pursue chemistry if you enjoy it. I feel like I'm in the EXACT same boat.

Note: I'm planning on a Medicinal Chemistry + Regular Chemistry double specialization of the Chemistry major, whilst concurrently taking all of the Pharmacology pre-requisites major so I've effectively triple-majored by the end of my uni bachelors. And I can't wait for next year, I'm excited for it all to happen. Trust me, Chemistry is good and it gets better. I don't know what happened for me in VCE with Chem, and I think you feel the same way. But pursue it. It's so worth your while.

Lol. I did 52 prac exams for midyear. Around 40 ish for end of year. Did all the study guides I had. I got a 36 for Chem too. Really disappointed tbh. I could've done a bit better in English if I kept a level-head and didn't bomb out on my context, which is normally my strongest in writing.
This is pretty much me: I need some help. Course help.
I really adore chemistry. BUT I love English too. I know I want to do something with Chem and I will...I just don't exactly know , what.

I said I wouldn't check my scores but I did (but that was to be expected, right? haha). Correctly predicted chemistry score but did not expect the math and physics scores at all after the ass whooping at exams and on the last couple of SACs. Best case scenario for me would've been anything over 80 and most of my 'realistic' predictions were high 70s so super happy with 84.70

2:27 was me this morning

Nisha, don't give up yet! Everyone has bad days or bad exams, seriously.

There are tons of careers that need science and english skills. Have you considered going into science communication or into science policy? Or science teaching?

If it makes you feel any better, I got a 40 in VCE methods, which is only a few points higher than your 36 in chemistry. I'm a physics major, and you'd think that physics needs a lot of maths... anyway, I'm still taking maths now, and even though I work really hard now, I still find it tough. I stay up really late most Wednesday nights doing my assignments. But things change, and I somehow managed to top our first differential equations midterm this semester (we have two midterms). Moral: work hard, and you can get to where you need to get. Don't take your VCE score as gospel, because things change over time.

I feel the same way. Though I'm happy with my score, I'm a tad disappointed because it didn't really correlate with my expectations. On the other hand, I did better in Literature than I would have thought. There are quite a few students I've talked to who received scores that didn't really reflect their writing ability IMO, it's quite subjective!

But oh well, at least it's over!

Nah, in all seriousness, this sort of stuff takes a little while to sink in. I can barely believe my own score and the outstanding scores in my class (considering we're not very academic as a school). 42 is a great result and I'm sure you'll come to realise that in the following days. :)

Congratulations everyone!

I have a small question to ask--
I'm a year 11 student this year and received my scores from the resultsandatar website. I was wondering whether these scores are scaled or not because I don't want to get my hopes up or anything.

Anyways, posting my results so others can compare.

Media studies:
A+, A+, A+ -- 49
Visual communication and design:
A+, A+, A+ (undeserving to say the least. Exam was a killer) -- 41

Hope everyone got the ATAR they were hoping for! This is the first year the ATAR Calculator hasn't crashed during this time of the year :) Earlier this year I upgraded the server software so it could handle the load better.

The ATAR Calculator normally has anywhere between 500,000 and 1.5 million calculations performed per month. There have been around 450,000 calculations performed in just the last two days, which is amazing. Here's a graph that doesn't really show much other than the spike :P:

Unwarranted comment Paul, the bullying is not on imo

Over-confidence is one thing, but you don't need to call him out on a public forum (whether that's true or not isn't even 100% certain).

You'll have to wait and see, it's still possible though and you will most likely be able to do a nursing course somewhere given your SEAS

Can someone please explain to me this....After looking at the methods exam 1 solutions I'm quite sure that I got 100% or at most 2 wrong on the exam 1 and I ended up getting an A  :(. Another question is why did my sacs get scaled down to an A when my average sac marks on methods was 96-97%?
( my cohort is quite weak btw). If it does help I did get b+ on the second methods exam. I got a 35 for methods and I'm honestly very disappointed and am a little confused with how my marks ended. Thanks  :)

I'm very happy with my results, got 91.45! Was expecting around ~ 85ish so I'm extremely happy because now I'm above the clearly in for Aerospace at Monash (Plus i have SEAS as well) :)

I was in absolute shock when I saw I had received a 35 RAW score for specialist! I NEVER expect to get that high! I thought maybe 28~32 but 35 I'm so happy with! For our school too, that's one of the highest spec scores in a while (if at all) to my knowledge. Mr. Pech said he can retire now lol (joking of course :P ). I'm also sure that pi will find it funny (and relatable) that I received an A+ for the second physics exam, having done 3 practice exams the day before and staying up till 12am to write a cheat sheet :P

Well done to everyone else!

Was expecting 42-45; found the exam easy but long; thought I dropped 8 marks at most - ended up with an A.

I'll base that on the fact that some of my writing was near illegible, however, which didn't help one bit.

Regardless, got a 40; somewhat disappointed but can't do much now!

Dropped 5 marks during the year, all during semester two due to careless errors.

Definition of A+: top 10%
Definition of 40: top 8%

Hence, A+ A+ A+ can net you as low as 38. It depends on how 'high' or 'low' your A+ is.

Hope that helps :)

I know a girl who got an A on one of her exams for Psychology who got 45, as did another who did Environmental Science and got a 45 as well with an A on the mid year. I'm really surprised seeing as so many people on this forum have stressed that you can't get over about 42-43 with an A on one of the two exams.

Oh! I can completely relate to you. I recieved a letter grade of A on all GAs, resulting with a raw study score of 37. I too honestly believed that I would have recieved a low 40 raw...42 to be precise. Based on my opinion though, yes it does reflect your mark to some extent, with the exception of GA2 ( because it's scaled based on how you rank). However, I do question whether or not you may have lost 12 marks on the latter exam. Now, I am not saying that's you have fabricated that number, but if I had to guess you probably selected that number at random, am I right? However, as previously mentioned, the statement of marks will not change your marks but nevertheless if you feel that it will provide you with some piece of mind, then by all means go ahead and purchase it. Good Job on attainting your score :)

Good Job on attainting your score :)

yea these marks don't really make much sense?! cos my friend got A, A+, A+ and she only got 42?!

Depends on plenty of things, but it's a safe bet to guess that it'd be around mid 30s.

i got
B+,A, A for Business and = 36
B+,A,A for Accounting and = 36

but this is high as my A's were for exams, if the B+ was for the exams it would probably be 34-35

Hmm, in regards to your friend's score, I am more than certain that it makes sense. I'm not too sure if you are aware of this, but in some scenarios, recieving low A+'s for all GA's would yeild you a raw score of 39. Moreover, I was speaking to a girl before who recieved A+ A+ A for legal studies and ended with a raw of 42. Honestly, it really depends on whether she recieved a high, mid or low A+.

What is an A,A,B+ ?

It's quite hard to determine what raw score you would recieve because I'd need to know exactly how 'high' or 'low' these grades are and the strength of your cohort. However, if I had to make a guess, that would probably yeild you a raw of 34-37

Hmm so having got my statement of marks for Psych (77.5/90), it seems it was mainly the three mark question that I forgot to answer + the extended response (5/10) that messed me up.
Interestingly, I received a better score for my second essay (Harwood) in Literature, despite putting much more time and effort into the first.

Btw, does anyone know how Special At Specialist went?

As of my stalking, he got <40 for Specialist Maths - pretty embarrassing given his comments and the fact that he went around rubbing his confidence into other people's faces.

Yeah, my scores were far less than I thought I would get  :'(
ATAR - 86.75
Literature - 23
Methods - 42
Spec - 37
Philosophy - 32
German - 20

Guess I'll be going to Deakin next year...

Well done, Special At Specialist, you may have not gotten what you had expected but I can see some pretty great scores there. And for those making negative comments or criticisms about others and their scores, please keep it to your self as I see it as very rude, disrespectful and most of all hurtful. ???

Unfortunate about that Literature score, closes quite a number of doors  :-\

This being one of them.

Not to worry, work hard in first year and a transfer is definitely on the cards  ;)

Just a quick question, I want to do civil engineering at Melbourne Uni. When I called the uni they told me that I have to do bachelor of science or environments  and then do masters of civil. Now, is there any major difference between environments or science?? Secondly, when I do graduate will my chance of getting a job be different to males??

I don't think I'll be accepted into any Monash/Melbourne course without a 25 in my English subject.

Yeah, when I saw that score I actually wanted to cry... I honestly don't know how I got that low. I was expecting at least a 30. It kind of makes my ATAR score redundant, since I could have gotten in the 60's and still been given just as many opportunities as I am now.

Not to worry, work hard in first year and a transfer is definitely on the cards  ;)

Thanks for the optimistic note :) I heard that if I get a 75% average in my first year at Deakin, they will let me transfer to Melbourne. I'm still not sure whether I want to risk that or just do year 12 English at a TAFE for 4 hours per week and treat it like a gap year. Either way, I won't be doing literature again.

Definitely not. VCE is history.
Your ATAR, 5 subjects, non-metro school is equivalent to a mid-90's.
You are a Uni level student, your Lit result was an accident.
Therefore, you go to Deakin, if need be, smash it in the first year, which is well within your capabilities, and then transfer to Science at UoM or Monash which I believe is your rightful home.

Report back to me in 12 months.

EDIT: I also sense that academically you are on a upward curve, so there is no point wasting a year, use it to learn 'good stuff'

Thank you! I hope I can undo the mess I caused by scoring really well in first year uni. I'll try to stay active on AN and help out other year 12 students, so I'll tell you exactly what's happening by the end of January.

I can thank AtarNotes for that  ;) I think that visiting this site fairly regularly throughout year 12 really helped me. Everyone is so kind, knowledgeable and supportive  :) I know I don't study that much, but I did next to nothing in year 11, so I'd like to think that my study habits have improved, and will hopefully continue doing so (procrastination is still my worst enemy).

Hi,

I sent in my application for statement of study score and statement of marks form in 2 days ago.  How long will it take to arrive? Also does anyone know when the ATAR calc will include 2012 scores?

Thanks

Just don't worry, go enjoy the festivities

Although I only got 32 for both HHD and Psych, I'm still pretty happy because I come from a non-English speaking background. It might not be amazing scores for some people though, but I'm still proud of myself ;D

On another note, I'm still mourning over the 27 for ESL :( my most favourite subject of all 4.

What can I say besides this equation:
passionate subject + amazing tutor - (neglected teacher + laziness) = unmotivated student  ???

LOL +1 for your equation  :D

I feel so ashamed when telling people my vnese and esl scores because vnese is my 1st language but I got lower SS than esl :(
My relatives and teachers in my country even make fun at me and ask: You go to other country and neglect your mother tongue? How embarrassing its ==

I was really suprised with my business result as I only got a 37 and that's the only subject I enjoyed and tried for, I got. An A and a A+ and a b+ on the exam and I thought the exam was easy. I did not study at all and got an A+ for everything in information technology and an A on the exam which I did not do a single second of study for except for doing the class work and got a 40. Further for me was a suprise as well not because I did no study but because I sucked at it and missed out a whole section on the exam and got a 30. Accounting I tried and studied hard for but I always didn't get the greatest marks and when I was talking to other people who did the subject the previous year I assumed lied to me cause they said they got A's and b+'s and they said they only got 30 but I got two b+'s and one A and got a 34 which I was happy with considering I was expecting in the late 20's with what other people were telling me.
