I think it'd be cool if we shared what we were playing, so that maybe we can discuss and improve on our pieces :)
Don't forget to post your instrument!
I play the piano, and although I'm not doing vce music I'm trying to learn the first few of Bach's Goldberg Variations, Chopin Nocturne Opus 9 No.2, Chopin Ballade No.1 (so far with little success), and the 3rd movement of Beethoven's Waldstein Sonata (much less success, lol).
-
I play piano too and I'm also working on that chopin ballade! How hard is that fast bit at the end ... it makes my hands hurt :(
I'm also doing umm ... bach P/F No.8 (Bk 1), some haydn sonata, the last chopin etude, some obscure 20th century piece, beethoven sonata op.110, and rachmaninovs 2nd concerto <3

Cool, yeah the last bit is a bit hectic, but the middle bit with all the octaves hurts me much more. Have you seen Horowitz play? It's one of my favorite vids:

at the moment i'm working on some fun pieces from games/movies. eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kJ_y_XK0II&feature=related (oh and yeh thats not me playing...). I've bought some great books off ebay and got them shipped to Australia so I've got some great fun music now!
-
Omg last year I was crazy over Final Fantasy (and other SquareSound) music, luckily it's died down enough for me to do other stuff. It's really fantastic stuff, people definitely shouldn't underestimate 'game' music. Too bad many pieces aren't easily adapted to piano though :(
-
Play Electric Bass, doing Solo music this year, and playing in a few groups who are doing Group Performance.
I HAVE TO LEARN 6 SONGS, how shit is that?

Yeh there's some awesome pieces...kinda sucks that its japanese so i have to keep writing the title etc on it ;)
-
My piano teacher who I stopped lessons with this year gave me a book of beethoven sonatas so I've been reading through that book. I really enjoy the opus 10 sonatas and opus 13 - Sonata Pathetique.
I used op.10 no.2 first movement as one of my pieces for VCE
-
Atm I'm focusing on my pieces for AMEB 8th grade flute :-\
Boehm Study No. 11 in D flat major
Busser Prelude and Scherzo
Mozart Sonata in F for flute and piano
and orchestral excerpts
For oboe I'm just doing random fun pieces :)
Soon I'll be starting on more solo performance flute pieces though.

Ahhh, I remember doing 8th Grade AMEB for piano back in year 9 =D the memories =P
I'm currently learning La Campanella! Yes that's right, the bell song =) Lovin it!
-
i can barely remember what pieces i played in my performance exam...
think it was mostly jazzy stuff ???
-
Pianist here!
For the sake of pure leisure, I'm trying Flight of the Bumblebee at the moment :D
-
I'm trying Flight of the Bumblebee at the moment :D
coolest. piece. EVER.
-
pianist here! trying to finish AMEB grade 8 by april, but with my laziness, i don't think i'll pass. the only practice i do is the quick run-through 30 minutes before my lesson xD
-
On piano, I used to do classical stuffs - but I've moved onto doing more contemporary repertoire; will be doing AMEB Gr. 6 this year (as much as I hate them)
With voice, I usually do classical voice, some jazz and music theatre. It's my Gr. 0 thing, but I'm best at it anyway :P (again, </3 AMEB)

sux ey... my mommy wants me to go on and do associate or w/e it is and then get my teacher's diploma =X
Has anyone learned la campanella before? greatest song eva =P totally kills bumbling bee's
OR DOES IT!??? VOte NoW:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEnfZjqMSy0 >>> La Campanella
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6A-JYbu1Os >>> Flight of the Bumblebee (OH and if you decide this song is better because the pianist is really cute, I will find you and hurt you) =P
Personally I enjoyed this pianist's version of la campanella better than the one up there:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEtQbAh9aHs
VOTE NOW!
-
La Campanella, but I it's way way harder. You've got to be a top notch pianist to play it decently, since any mistakes really stick out.
-
Hmm I'd have to go with la campanella .... it's such a beautiful piece! And difficult :( I'll attempt it again someday when I have the patience to actually work on it. Right now I have that horrible habit of just playing through the piece a couple of times and calling it practice. Probably why I suck lol :D
-
Personally I think this has to be by far the best interpretation of La Campanella I've seen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaX1j4elJRU
Ninwa should know who I'm talking about :)
-
interesting interpretations
yeh i should do some AMEB grades too excal ;)

Ninwa should know who I'm talking about :)
In my opinion this interpretation is too "bouncy" it sounds more like a march... I also believe the way the other two play it are more smooth and makes the piece feel connected and at one(less of staccato)

Before I even click on that link .... is it Valentina Lisisttisitsiisissa-I-can't-spell-her-name-but-you-get-what-I-mean? :P

Can you play Moonlight 3rd Mvmt. ?
If so, I bow down to you =D

I don't even know how it goes *shame on me*
Now that you've piqued my curiosity, tomorrow I shall raid my Beethoven sonata books and read thru it and get back to you :P

Although, I prefer La Campenalla to be that bouncy and staccato. I think Lisitsa achieves more of a scherzando feel over the others

Can you play Moonlight 3rd Mvmt. ?

Yep I can play it, I learnt it yesterday :P ... it's not THAT bad, just a lot of arpeggios ... Beethoven can only get so difficult technically :)
If you want a hard piece:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pFsMqVr3B8
The few times I performed that piece I had to put it at the end of my program cos my arms were so dead I couldn't play for about 30 mins afterwards x.x

You played that??? Wow you must be like... Mozart reincarnated or something. That's amazingly hard.
-
Hahaha yeah I played it but I was sooooooooooooooo shit at it :D
-
Scarbo??!?!??? Again I'm amazed :o
-
Don't be, I was terrible at it, really. Scarbo is impossibly difficult esp if you have small hands like me :(
-
Anyone who even atempts scarbo is amazing in my books :P
I'm also adding czenry studies for piano to my repertoire, I've just been playing through a couple of them. Has anyone been working on any good ones to try?
-
Btw Ninwa, have you tried any other Ravel?
-
yep :)
ondine from gaspard as well, i didn't do le gibet cos my hands are too small
sonatine
the concerto that isn't the left hand one (I forget the key .... lol)
-
Concert in G????????? Odine.... All three movements of the sonatine yeah...
:idiot2:
you're too good! :P Jeux D'eau is one of my favourites of ravel, I've tried playing it but I only got a crappy score off the internet that's too hard to read especially since there are way too many random notes
-
On the first page of Jeux D'eau when you have those distorted arpeggios going down to the main melody, I can't seem to find a fingering for them!
-
I might have the music for that! I have a whole book of Ravel. I'll go have a look and scan it if I find it =]
Haha I was horrible at the sonatine cos I hated it cos it was hard and sounded weird and I refused to practise anything that I hate :P
Ondine would have to be my favourite ... it's so beautiful ...
-
Yeah Odine's my favourite movement.
Yeah those arpeggios in Jeux D'eau are hard to get your fingers around, I end up repeating my thumb a couple of times..
-
You people are all officially crazy. Period.
=p
/me sticks to his singing.
-
Yay, after much battling with much mundane and redundant homework I have managed to play fully through Ballade No.1 with only a few technical hitches and little emotional depth. Now I'm going to try Liszt's Rhapsody No.6. I really like the B minor - B flat major (Supertonic minor to Tonic Major, better in second inversion) transitions near the ending, they sound sublime. Does anyone know what they are called or how they are used in theory?
By the Way, if anyone is looking for music by classical composers, check out
www.sheetmusicarchive.net
I worship that site. Daily.
-
Yeah lol that's where I got Jeux D'eau from. I also use www.sheetmusicfox.com but now for many works it just directs you to sheetmusicarchive if sma already have it
-
yep that site is AWESOME. congrats on learning the ballade lol
Liszt is so difficult! but brilliant lol. B min to Bb maj?! weird ??? nope sorry I have no idea what that's called, I've never even heard of it in any piece ...
-
btw, does anyone sometimes have issues downloading from sheetmusicarchive at all? A lot of the time it tells me my free daily limit is exceeded even though I havent visited the site in weeks...
-
yes, I had that issue, but I've figured out a way to get around the limit, just clear your cookies and it'll think you haven't downloaded anything at all ... I used that to download big pieces like concertos lol
-
oh nice! I think the shite-ness of my internet when I'm capped also has something to do with it
-

You're more of a geek than I thought you out to be :P

not really, supertonic minor would be C minor.
but yeah, that's always a beautiful little chord progression.
-

hahaha thanks? when it comes to downloading tchaikovskys 1st concerto <3 (which is the best piece ever written for piano and I don't care what anyone else says) I'll go to all lengths of geekiness to get it :P
-
I just got it off sheet music fox, it's teh whole score, not just the piano which is good if I'm not intending to try learn it as yet... AND it turns out the 4 cd set of vladimir horowitz I had bought last weekend has his recording of the concerto. I'm listening to it now :)
-
vladimir horowitz = god
-
I've got to listen to it a bit more BUT it's true, that concerto deserves a <3
And funnily enough Rach3 is straight after it. I'm amazed at what this $4.99 collection of cds has to offer (really bad sound quality though)
-
actually i retract that statement. rachmaninov = god. I have a recording of rachmaninov himself playing rach 2. shit sound quality and the orchestra sounds funny ... but brilliant music
yay for liking classical music, its always so cheap cos no-one buys it :D
"He was made of steel and gold; steel in his arms, gold in his heart. I can never think of this majestic being without tears in my eyes" - Josef Hoffman
-
not henle... my teacher always wants me to get henle but it's so expensive...
When I was in China last year i got Chopin's complete piano works in 2 volumes. I can't remember how much it cost but whatever it was it cost 1/6 of the yuan price. I think it's as good as henle plus it seems to have more fingerings.
-
Can anyone suggest a Scarlatti sonata that I should play? I'm trying to choose out of the 555 and I have found a few that might be worth learning, but I'm still undecided
-
hehe im doing chopins ballade no.1 too! and i hate the end bit.... and also sonatine by ravel.. the whole thing which is AWESOMELY cool :P
-
hardest piece ever: Brahms Paganini Variations. The only person who I've seen play this well is Elena Ulyanova. She also played Liszt Tarantella. OMG she is so good -.-
-
I heard Gaspard de la Nuit the other day, in a 13th century church. ninwa, you played Scarbo when you were 16 :o you must be truly 1337
-
violin
meditation and bach
and some other mediocre pieces, that most of classical musos would go pfft at
lol
-
Bach sonatas and partitas? Which ones?
I'm playing the Bruch Violin Concerto for an audition in two weeks, but I'm not sure if I'll do the piece justice.
-
I play piano too and I'm also working on that chopin ballade! How hard is that fast bit at the end ... it makes my hands hurt :(

Yeah, that last bit is really hectic! I wish I could one day be good enough to play that Chopin Ballade... and the heavenly Rach 2! :)
NECRO AGAIN!
yeah rach 2, amazing!
im doing sibelius vln concerto, paganini caprice no. 24, carmen fantasy atm
-
plss dont forget rach 3..
-
<333 Carmen Fantasy.
Ooh, the.watchman, I'm now doing the whole Bruch - not just the first two movements!
Ah, paganini 24...
-

Carmen Fantasy is amazing! (Haven't played it in a little while though :P)
YAY! I learnt the third mvt about 18 months ago after my LMus exam, really fun!
Arrangement of Pag 24 for about six instruments begins tonight :D
-
Which movement of Carmen are you doing? I love the last one :)
-
Erm ... I've learnt them all :)
Yeah, the last one is epic (total thirds fail!)
-
Yeah, that last bit is really hectic! I wish I could one day be good enough to play that Chopin Ballade... and the heavenly Rach 2! :)
Rach 2 is my favourite piano piece of all time! I attempted Rach 2 and failed miserably. My piano teacher even said to me "erm maybe you should set that one aside for a while and try something else..." (he's usually really supportive and complimentary) *sob*
-
For a play I'm doing, I'm learning the one bit in Rach 2, movement 3, where the piano plays the theme solo. Butchering it heavily, but I think I'm starting to get the hang of the notes...=_="

Cool! Which play is this?
I love Rach 2 :)
-
History Boys. It's about a school, and there's a character who knows how to play the piano (ie. me). Most of the music is just accompanying the singing guy, but there are two bits where I have to play Rach 2 and then the Pathetique sonata...both only briefly, thank God.

Not sure yet. Director is deciding (it's not specified which movement to play in the script). >.>
It's so weird doing this after two years of non-piano playing... At least I haven't lost ALL of my ability (I still played in-between to accompany myself singing xD).
-
Oh, I've lost most of mine.
*sadface*

Ohgod, that showed that at assembly? I'm doing Viva La Vida, singing with a friend accompanying me on piano. If possible I'm gonna get a string quartet too. =)
-
EvangelionZeta, I didn't know you played a string instrument. I thought you sang and played french horn :)
-
wow really? what string instrument do you play? ;)

Bit late, but I meant that I was going to get some strings to accompany my singing Viva La Vida (I did end up getting strings, too).

Play Electric Bass, doing Solo music this year, and playing in a few groups who are doing Group Performance.
I HAVE TO LEARN 6 SONGS, how shit is that?
I'm also playing bass too, it's a lot haha...
What songs are you doing? atm I've learnt Bach Bourrees I and II and I've learnt I Heard it through the Grapevine, now trying to do Bass Folk Song - Stanley Clarke
