no all the way... any1 saying yes is delusional.
tougher laws + harsher punishments + long prison time
no bloody hormone treatment, wtf korea srsly
glad i live in aus...

I would of thought castration is a harsher punishment??
I think the threat of being castrated may deter some attacks from occuring

ok, so what do you think would be a harsher punishment that would prove more effective given that execution and prison fail in detering criminals?

From what I understand, there's no surgical removal of the penis/testes. It's chemical therapy that reduces hormone levels (testosterone and aldosterone from memory), in order to decrease sexual urges. So, as far as I know, it's perfectly viable for use in both sexes. Obviously it has various side effects in men, since testosterone is a pretty key male hormone.

I disapprove on the grounds of human/individual rights, which is why I don't support it being compulsory. Like someone posted, a choice betwenn jail and the treatment makes more sense.

Hormones have different effects depending on gender.

In addition, it ignores all the other hormones involved in human sexual behaviour.

@gmx: I'd rather not insult homosexuals by lumping pedophiles in the same category. Pedophilia is a mental illness, not a sexual orientation. And yes, I know homosexuality used to be considered a 'mental illness' and South Korea is treating pedophiles in the same way homosexuals once were.
But 2 same gendered, consenting individuals who are sexually attracted to each other are on a totally different level to a mentally unsound adult whose sexual attraction to children comes from having power over and dominating them (or so I've heard).

And add to that the fact that they likened racism to harsh treatment of pedophiles.

Yeah of course they do, but the process obviously involves different/multiple hormones. I'm just going on what I remember from the last time I read about this.

conditionally approve, unless they include more iffy scenarios, like the 19yo having sex with his 15yo girlfriend

I don't really approve of forcing people to undergo chemical castration. Strapping them down and injecting them with a bunch of chemicals against their will isn't really the right way to go i reckon. Not sure if these have serious health effects either but hormones are important right and i'm guessing messing with them could potentially do some damage.

I think it should be a voluntary thing this or jail for first time offenders. I haven't read it yet but do they chemically castrate them for a set period or for the rest of forever. Because if they did this to an innocent person, in addition to ruining their good name, they'd cause them some serious psychologically damage strapping them down and shooting them up with this stuff.

That thing about letting 1 innocent person go to jail to put away 10 or something, i wouldn't allow the 1 person to go to jail. So, I'm going along that mindset.

This wont stop them from physically raping or abusing people. Sure it might make them less horny or something along those lines, won't stop them from raping and abusing people. All guys get horny but they don't go out and rape people or head down to the kindergarden...

These pedo's and rapists have serious psychological issues as well and those wont be fixed by just reducing their desire.

I think if you're picking alternatives, its better to put a repeat offender behind bars, at least that way he cant stroll down to the playground. Some psychological help wouldn't go astray either, right?

Yes but they are the vast majority, no? (No, I do not have evidence for this, but I would love to be proven wrong)

And at least removing the thing that makes guys horny would help alleviate the problem. Sure they can still abuse children in other ways, but something's better than nothing.

I disagree with the "forced" part of the punishment, chemical castration should be offered as an alternative to jail time (for example)

Still, I agree with this.

Not as vast a majority as you would think, more like 75% of convictions. It is a common view that all pedophiles are men, mainly due to stories of abuse against men by women being ignored for more sensational stories that capitalize on the worlds obsession with female virginity (and I don't mean to trivialize sexual abuse here). You will see stories like "25 sexiest female sex offenders" and cases of female teachers having sex with their students labeled as "affairs", It's no wonder that it is estimated that 80% of cases of sex offences by women go unreported. In my opinion it is the view that you have just expressed, that pedophilia is a wholly male phenomena, that will continue this cycle.

Of course sexual abuse of any person is a very serious issue, with the sexual abuse of minors being an even more important issue due to their vulnerability and the psychological harms of abuse (which is prevalent at all ages but more so for children). Unfortunately the complexity of child sex abuse has caused lawmakers and politicians alike to take a very hard-line and aggressive approach to the whole issue, it is hard to say no to a policy when your opposition has the public convinced that anything short of wholehearted agreement means that you are in cahoots with "those dastardly kiddie fiddlers we saw on Today Tonight". This unfortunate black and white view on the issue has meant that "crimes" such as consensual sex between two teenagers is grouped with the systematic abuse of children by pedophile networks. And then of course the ridiculous laws that are pushed through because they will "keep our children safe". Surely pedophilia must rank up there with the invention of 'terrorism' in a list of a police states favorite things.
