Most people at my school do 10 units and very few do 12 units. it was more recommended to us that we should do 10 units because we could manage the workload better (some subjects have heavy content) and some people do 11 units like me :)  I went into Year 12 with 13 units but dropped down to 11 units (i dropped economics) because all my subjects were very heavy content based and trying to just remember stuff was a little too much.

I personally do 11 units (Adv English, General Maths. Society & Culture, Business Studies, Modern and Extension History). There's actually a fair balance between 10 and 12 (like 55% do 10 or something) and there's a few others like me who do 11. We actually have a few geniuses doing 13 and 14 though. We also have one kid who is only doing EIGHT units. This is because he did an accelerated maths program from year 9 onwards meaning he did his 2U Maths HSC exam this year, even though we graduate this year. Because he did accelerated maths, he got to do photography (offered on the same line as maths for us) and that was a 1 year course. Thus, he only has to do 8. So our school (Public, Co-ed) has a variety of people doing a variety of units
