Hmm... what I mean by that is at the very least encouraging students to do more social service/community service.

A little curious, at your school what do you talk about at assemblies?
I guess I better defend my school here:

Uhh, upcoming events (school productions, music nights, exams etc.), achievements of students/staff (usually sports, debating etc.), reinforcement of rules (littering and uniform, which has been cracked down on hard; not hanging around in groups at the local shops also a big point [i think the local shopkeepers were getting annoyed]), stuff about taking advantage of opportunity and studying hard, new plans for the school etc. Also usually have a student band/soloist play some music.

I guess the littering thing is an example of bad values, but the amount of rubbish on the ground has reduced greatly since they started cracking down hard on it.

If you want recent examples of helping out the wider community, there's some students at my school that organised some overseas trip over the holidays to help out people in need there. Also there was a fundraiser that's being going on for a while to send a group of students to go to Northern Territory and spend some time helping people there (I think they've managed to raise enough money for that now). That stuff will get mentioned heavily at assemblies as well.

In response to everybody, what you are talking about is values, and that obviously depends on the person, I know heaps of good kids from public schools, as well as heaps of good kids from private schools, in fact I would say almost half of my close friends are from private schools (or have gone to private schools) - I, in no way, think that these friends are superior to ones that went to public schools.

However, prejudices stand and obviously we tend to believe that kids who go to private schools end up being better people, not better students only, but better people as well, and this is not true! I know someone paying private school fees to do VCAL - like seriously...the Victorian Certificate of Attempted Learning ;) - they're paying to attempt to learn! LOL!

But that aside, I think that public schools/private schools both have the opportunity to help people, just that, as with everything else, in private schools you're spoon fed with everything you need making everything easy and readily available, but hey, you don't pay 20k for nothing =.=" but does that mean that there are no opportunities in public schools...NO! if you want to volunteer for charity, do so outside of school! if you want to do volunteer work, there are organisations out there, that i know of, that might interest you, it has nothing to do with the school

and personally i think that private schools obviously have to offer benefits for the money that you pay, otherwise no one would go there, whether or not these benefits are of use is a difference

and Rohitpi, I fully agree with you, they leech teachers from public schools as well, which is a huge issue, plus like my school should have at least 5-6 more 99+ students who have been siphoned off to other schools, if not more 99+ kids :P

I dont believe private school kids become better people than the rest of us. Like you said, they are spoonfed. I strongly believe the better people are those that come out from the worst of things, and are a lot more humble and hard working for what they desire to become. They dont rely on daddy's pocket.

And I dont know if this is true, but some kid who said to go to my school and is now at Melbourne High apparently got 100% on the UMAT, or very very very very very very close to it. I think it's bullshit, but it is an example of how the best student get leeched out. And no I dont go to a public school.

@laseredd:

Haha, nah, I wasn't going to start attacking your school lol!

Those trips sound great... Am I under the false impression that not many schools would plan trips such as the ones at your school?

I have no idea if other schools organise stuff like that. I suspect a lot of schools would involve themselves in this kind of stuff. I'm pretty sure most schools would have some people who involve themselves in the 40 hour famine etc.

I think a lot of it this community stuff depends on student initiative. If the students organise it and put forward the idea, it'll probably get done. It's not going to be the teachers telling students to go out and help this person or do this etc. (you can't really force someone to volunteer). Though there would be stuff organised by teachers, I just can't think of any examples.

I do think that you kind of generalising about state schools. Again, I can only speak about my school, but I'm pretty sure that most schools would have students who do good stuff for their community. That's probably true for all schools - private or public.

Ah okay then. That's reasonable :)

Apologies to anyone I managed to offend when I generalised.

Bringing the thread back to topic.... JMSS and Haileybury are both good schools. As highlighted by everyone... there are both positives and negatives to attending a state/independent school. It really is up to your sister whether she prefers the environment at JMSS or the one at Haileybury. I do highly recommend your sister to have a look at the IB course though, Haileybury definitely offers this option.

You touch on an important point here, which is that life outcomes, the fulfilment of values, etc. can depend on more than just what school you go to. You can engage with the wider community through all sorts of means. Just like you can decide to spend your afternoons teaching yourself from textbooks; or just like your parents can encourage you to study; or just like you can join an after-hours sporting team. I think it's a bit sad for one's school to mediate one's entire experience for 13 years, there are always other things out there!

wow, this thread getting off topic! But thanks for all your opinions. My sis has made up her mind, and Haileybury it is! Although JMSS sounds good, it has not been established yet hence she thinks its safer to start yr 10 at haileybury. Hope she doesnt turn out to be one of those private "cockheads" LOOOL....only joking :)
