obviously schools wont encourage bad behaviour
and they are not thought to be dodgy suburbs, they are. I live in the south-east and it's the dodgiest place you will go through
if the opportunity is there to bag a couple or so $, they will attempt it, no matter what they were told before hand

state schools don't place a greater emphasis on it because they don't have the resources for it.

You don't exactly need resources to encourage community service. A voice is simply all you need.

Unless you count that voice as a resource- labour, then I don't have anything to say to that...

Humans are selfish by nature....keep that in mind. Selflessness is not found in the majority of people. It's great that you seem to possess this attribute though.

Hmm... I think selflessness or at least partial selflessness can always be developed. That's where education comes into play :) Lack of knowledge may be the reason why others don't really see the importance of helping one another... maybe...

Lack of knowledge is one thing, it's another to not use that knowledge and pursue one's own desires. If anything I think it's today's society with the lavish lifestyle we all seek. I blame the media and Hollywood for this :)

I'm not sure what you mean by emphasising social interests? What activities are you wanting the schools to do?

I don't know about what state schools you've been to, but my school involves itself in instilling good values and stuff a fair bit.

Hmm... what I mean by that is at the very least encouraging students to do more social service/community service.

A little curious, at your school what do you talk about at assemblies?

^^^^ it's one thing to have a voice and yell out in the middle of the street whilst pointing at a hobo "That man needs your help", it's another for yourself to go over and give him a hand.

Sigh, such a sad reality.

not really. You see one person giving a gold coin to a man on the street, then you will see others follow suit.

But it is reality. It is nature. There is no point defying it. Your arguments are all sound in theory but they just don't work in reality.

@ Chemkid.... Ahhh I didn't mean it like that, lol. This is quite frustrating. Obviously, we don't just speak empty words. =/

EDIT: A voice is needed to raise awareness.

In response to everybody, what you are talking about is values, and that obviously depends on the person, I know heaps of good kids from public schools, as well as heaps of good kids from private schools, in fact I would say almost half of my close friends are from private schools (or have gone to private schools) - I, in no way, think that these friends are superior to ones that went to public schools.

However, prejudices stand and obviously we tend to believe that kids who go to private schools end up being better people, not better students only, but better people as well, and this is not true! I know someone paying private school fees to do VCAL - like seriously...the Victorian Certificate of Attempted Learning ;) - they're paying to attempt to learn! LOL!

But that aside, I think that public schools/private schools both have the opportunity to help people, just that, as with everything else, in private schools you're spoon fed with everything you need making everything easy and readily available, but hey, you don't pay 20k for nothing =.=" but does that mean that there are no opportunities in public schools...NO! if you want to volunteer for charity, do so outside of school! if you want to do volunteer work, there are organisations out there, that i know of, that might interest you, it has nothing to do with the school

and personally i think that private schools obviously have to offer benefits for the money that you pay, otherwise no one would go there, whether or not these benefits are of use is a difference

and Rohitpi, I fully agree with you, they leech teachers from public schools as well, which is a huge issue, plus like my school should have at least 5-6 more 99+ students who have been siphoned off to other schools, if not more 99+ kids :P

It certainly works at my school (or so I believe... it worked for me at least? :) ), I don't see how it wouldn't work at other schools.... Inequity, unfairness.... how do we resolve these issues if we refuse to change/attempt to fix it in any way possible?

I was referring to the lavish lifestyle we all seek. Note this IS a generalisation. Selfless people DO exist - they are just the MINORITY.
